Suggestions for information to include in show posts on the KDRT home page

At some of the Thursday evening DJ meetings this winter, among other times, we've talked about what makes a good post for the show files that appear on the KDRT home page.

So, I wrote a list of suggestions based on my years trying to interest readers in the stories we posted at the papers where I've worked. KDRT isn't a newsroom and it isn't formal, so I'm not suggesting a bunch of Thou Shalts ... but this is a list of proven practices that will help listeners find and enjoy your work.

NOTE: I do suggest a small style change in here, namely, to Drop the Policy of Capitalizing Most Words in Titles. In my view, the style is stilted, mildly confusing, and archaic. But that's a call for the KDRT steering commitee, or whoever decides such things.

If you have questions, please feel free to ask!

thanks,

Bll Buchanan

Tascam Field Recorder Debrief - Part 1

The Tascam DR-100MKII is the new field audio recorder acquired by DMA. This blog entry will briefly discuss some of the functionality and features of the unit, specifically what buttons and switches to be aware of on the different sides of the unit.

For this debrief, we will assume that you begin with the side with the display face up. This is the front face of the device. The left side of the device is the bottom face, the right side of the device is the right face and the bottom side of the device is the bottom face. The back face of the device is the side that touches the surface of what you have placed the Tascam on.

The power button is located on the left face of the device. Press and hold the power button to turn the device on. The USB and Power Adapter ports are located on the left face as well. Using a Power Adapter allows the device to operate from a wall socket rather than the batteries.

Field Recording

This blog post will explain equipment use, scene setup and good interview practices when engaging in in-field audio recording.

KNOW YOUR RIG

A rig is the common term for your recording gear. It usually consists of a recording unit, a mic, headphones and any other peripherals needed.

While DMA will be purchasing its own rig, it will help to know what a quality rig looks like. Here's a look at a rig with equipment that could buy from a website like B&H:

audio recording unit, like a flash recorder-directly to hard disk

extra flash cards, like compact flash cards from lexar.

pen and pencil for notes- don't forget!

headphones- 100.00 standard- Sony Sig MDR-V6

Rhode N2- shotgun. Audio Technica A-22.

Wind sock /Softy - Used to block the wind from ruining the recording

Pistol grip for mic - use the grip, sitting down, and only recording for

half-hour to 3 hours max

New and Used plastic baggies for batteries.

USB cord for downloading.

Manual for audio recorder

Drupal: Advanced Posting

Hey all! Welcome back to Drupal tutorials! This post is primarily pointed at DJs who may want to add a little more pizazz to their show pages or blog entries. This information is only recommended for those who have some experience with HTML coding.

The standard body text input shows users an upper level of actual workings. You're seeing the final product of a complex structure of code. To gain access to the more basic levels of the code, hit the "Disable rich-text" option.

There is then a drop down menu, allowing you to view three separate types of HTML: filtered HTML, full HTML, and plain text. Choose an option according to your needs and comfort level.

From here, you can "easily" embed video or do anything else that you fancy HTML people know how do. This is the section that allows you to be most creative with your entries, given that you know how to do so.

As always, don't forget to save.

-And deleting posts.

For an example of what I mean, let's take a look at the Davisville show page.

As you can see Mr.Buchanan has down a great job of adding both pictures and descriptions to each of his individuals shows. You too can do this! And its easy!

Drupal: Creating Playlists Pre-Show

Hey Everyone! And welcome back for another one of your lovely "Drupl How-To's." This time we'll be discussing creating playlists for shows that have not yet been uploaded to the website.

"BUT TRISTAN!" you say, "had we not discussed this in your previous post?!?!"

It's true. We discussed a method for adding show playlists for shows already uploaded. However, this is a method to create playlists for shows that are not yet available online. This means that this method is entirely optional. Feel free to use whatever method of playlist upload you prefer and are most comfortable with.

Step One

Go ahead and log in like you normally would. Scroll down to the bottom of the KDRT page, and use the login box to access your account.
