An hour of jazz guitar, vocals, sax, and flute!
Blues jazz, bebop, bossa nova, and even a little soul and pop tonight. Ella, Louis, Oscar, Gil, Cannonball; Earl Hines, Paul Desmond, and more.
Benny Carter, plus cool jazz West coast style tonight in the first half hour. Vocalists in the second half: Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Merrill, and Diana Krall.
A sampling of 1950’s jazz! Most of tonight’s selections are from 1957. Vocals by Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Anita O’Day. Ben Webster, Art Pepper, Paul Gonsalves, Gerry Mulligan on sax. Clark Terry on trumpet, Art Blakey and Max Roach on drums.
Two featured artists tonight. Charlie Rouse, long-time member of Thelonious Monk’s band, doing two Monk classics in the first half hour. Then a retrospective on Birélli Lagrene, French guitarist whose style has ranged across the spectrum of 1980’s jazz, in the second half. All mixed in with some funk, soul, and R&B from George Benson; plus, Ella with Joe Pass.
