KDRT has a new world music program, Crossing Continents, from Gil Medovoy, on Mondays at 10 a.m.
You might know Gil from his years at KDVS. Crossing Continents features music from the Middle East, Mediterranean, North Africa, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, both traditional and contemporary.
And -- Gil really knows the subject. Here's his debut episode for KDRT.
LOIS RICHTER is an active member of the community in Davis, California. In 1980, she started her main company, "The Organizer", to help people keep the papers from taking over their lives. Once the Internet came into being, Lois did website design and taught for many years (thru Davis Adult School, Davis Senior Center, City of Davis, and the Internet Users' Group [IUG]). Semi-retiring in 2009 to help her Mom (who had lost much of her vision), Lois continued to work with a few private clients. After Mom died at age 98, Lois officially retired and began focussing more on making art and on the Whole Earth Festival -- long-time interests that had been put on hold for those last five years.
The UCD Arboretum, Davis Friends Meeting [Quakers], WEF, CWC, KDRT, DMA, Sr Cntr Jewelry Sale, indexing genealogy-related documents for use on FamilySearch.org, and various other volunteer tasks have kept Lois quite busy in recent years. Haiku & haiga, embossed aluminum, encaustic, ATCs, mosaic, and bent-wire sculpture are some of her recent art interests. The latest (and greatest!) is a variation of 'poured acrylics' that Lois calls 'swiped acrylics'.
DJ Rodriquez invites you to tune in to Silver Nine Volt Heart from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 for a live interview with Bay Area musician Maurice Tani. This special broadcast will highlight the sounds from Maurice's new album, All In, on the Little Village Foundation record label.
After a long career playing with legendary Bay Area bands such as The Flamin' Groovies, Big Bang Beat and the Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra, Maurice has embarked upon a new trail of solo creativity he calls "Americana, without limits." We will speak to him about his new adventures and his plans for the upcoming live performance at the Thursday Live! concert at the Odd Fellows Hall in Davis on Feb. 2.
On Jan. 14, 2023, the Music Center in Los Angeles had a celebration concert to honor Jerry Moss. Many artists participated, and today's Listening Lyrics plays some of their music.
In 1960, Moss moved from New York to Los Angeles, where he teamed up with Herb Alpert, forming Carnival Records in 1962 and running the company from an office in Alpert's garage. Discovering that the name was already taken, they dubbed their new company A&M Records.
In 1987, Moss and Alpert sold A&M to PolyGram Records for a reported $500 million. Both continued to manage the label until 1993, when they left because of frustrations with PolyGram's constant pressure to force the label to fit into its corporate culture. In 1998, Alpert and Moss sued PolyGram for breach of the integrity clause, eventually settling for an additional $200 million.

Always a crowd favorite, the Davis Odd Fellows' annual Holiday Show for Thursday Live! each December typically features several diverse local bands, each preparing an imaginative short set of seasonal songs. KDRT's Jim Buchanan often features his live recordings of these shows in his December "Live Tracks" episodes.
This year, KDRT has selected a sampling of these well-loved performances for our first live music CD project as part of our Fall Fundraiser week. Sound Harvest Volume 1 -- Holidays at the Hall contains eight songs ranging from Celtic to Klezmer, jazz to folk.
The bands include Me & Him and The Muddy Waders as well as Misner & Smith, Calvin Handy and The Jazz Patrol, and the Davis Klezmer Orchestra. These were recorded 2011-2015, and recently mastered by Foxtail Sound.

Bapu Vaitla, running to represent district 1 on the Davis City Council, will talk about music and share tracks that inspire and galvanize all our efforts towards building a better world this Friday on Listening Lyrics.
From his campaign website: “Bapu Vaitla was born in rural India and spent his childhood in Chicago and Los Angeles. He came to UC Davis for his undergraduate studies, where he forged strong bonds with the social and environmental justice community in town, learning about the power of science to change the world.
"His professional career has been in the global fight against hunger. He earned his PhD at Tufts University, focusing on the politics and economics of hunger, and later did a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University on climate change and food security. As former chair of the Social Services Commission, he led Davis's groundbreaking public safety reform process, and continues the fight to make affordable housing a policy priority.
Timothy Walker is a folk musician and singer-songwriter originally from the Atlanta area, but currently residing in Davis as he works on his PhD in English literature. He performs and writes music under the stage name Threadbare, Brother. His first full-length record, When the War is Through, was released in 2011. The album explores the themes of spiritual transformation in the midst of personal grief and uncertainty.
