That's Life

Lois Richter’s format for That’s Life is mostly interviews. Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

To suggest a topic for discussion or a person to interview, text Lois or leave a message in the comments here.

Davisville, March 25, 2019: The places where food comes from

Mon, 03/25/2019 - 6:10pm | Bill Buchanan

Field west of Davis January 2018.jpg

Farming is a big deal around here. Yolo County is home to one of the best academic ag programs in the world at UC Davis, and the Capay Valley north of Davis is an organic showpiece. Besides, we all eat! We all use materials that come from agriculture. Today’s guest is Brad Hooker, recently of UC Davis, and now the associate editor and founder of the new California bureau in Sacramento for the Agri-Pulse news organization. We talk about water, Silicon Valley’s interest in farming innovations, cannabis as a legal crop, UC Davis research, the importance of data, and other subjects from the ag beat.

Animation Discussion (plus Music) with Zahra Baxi. Recorded March 15th, 2019

Fri, 03/15/2019 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

Z Baxi.jpeg

For the last couple of years every Friday at Davis Media Access (and right next to the KDRT studio), teens have been participating in an animation class, in a self-organised group known as the Davis Teen Animators’ Club. Their mentor is DMA's own Alex Silva-Sadder. Well, as you might have guessed, we got to know them a bit, and a few months ago I asked them to join me this Friday. So listen now to club president Zahra Baxi and Alex as they share about animation and play some of their favorite music.

Special "Live DiRT", with Misner & Smith March 15, 2019 at 3:30PM

Fri, 03/15/2019 - 3:20pm | Pieter Pastoor

Misner+&+Smith+.jpeg

The program "Live DiRT" is dedicated to bringing you live performances at various pop-up times to fit the schedule of the artists appearing.

Hailing from Northern California, Misner & Smith’s music is a combination of soaring vocal harmonies, extremely tight instrumental arrangements, and story-filled, poetic songwriting, adding up to some of the most electrifying music on the scene today. The band’s sound harkens back to the bedrock of american rock & folk, but the diversity of styles and genres are one of the things that set M&S apart. They can shake the walls like a freight train and then quiet the room to a whisper in a single song. With two singers who could easily lead a band independently, Sam and Megan sing with one voice, with music that captures longing and belonging in the same moment. Close your eyes and you’ll be swept up in a sound that you’ll swear is a full band. The combination of musical dexterity and vocal prowess packs a punch that will linger with you for a long time to come.
