KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

In this World Music show, Gil covers the Middle East, the Mediterranean region, North Africa, Central Asia, and the Indian sub continent, including traditional and contemporary musical styles. This is not a pop music show!

"Byron Colborn was born in Santa Rosa, CA and grew up in Davis, CA. Byron studied music at many schools in California including Sonoma State University, Sacramento State, and the Jazzchool in Berkeley, CA before moving to Boston, MA where he studied at Berklee College of Music. He now resides in Sacramento, CA where he is a full time performer and teacher of music. Byron leads several local ensembles, including the Element Brass Band, a variety of small combos, and the 17-piece Byron Colborn Big Band.”

The New York Times recently posted a list of about 100 films coming out in the next two months. Seeing them all would take, what, about five weeks of full-time effort? This is why we need movie critics, to help sort 'em all out!

Chelsea Wolfe-Abyss

Chelsea Wolfe's music could possibly best be described as folk metal. But you might disagree--that's just my take.

Her sound is often noisy & dark (e.g. tracks 1 "Carrion Flowers" or 2 "Iron Moon" or 10 "Color of Blood"), but other moments are beautiful, tender, and delicate (e.g. tracks 4 "Maw" or 8 "Simple Death" or ). Her dad was in a country band & she loves Hank Williams, things you can totally hear in some of her songs. But then she took her country/folk roots and gave her music a goth/doom/metal spin.

I chose to play a Chelsea Wolfe album because I love her music--and also got majorly inspired after seeing her live in Sacto (her hometown!) last Friday! Hopefully you don't get put off by the metal or noisy descriptions. You might be pleasantly surprised by what she has to offer.

A Busy Week Of Fundraising Events

On behalf of all the volunteers at KDRT 95.7 FM, we thank our listeners, supporters, and local businesses that helped make our 2017 Fall Fundraiser a resounding success! We met our fundraising goal, made new friends in the community, broadcast live music from a variety of venues, and joined with our neighbors for dining and beverages throughout the week at Sudwerk Brewing Co., Thai Canteen, Teabo Café, Yoloberry Yogurt, Woodstock’s Pizza, and Berryessa Brewing Co. We thank these local establishments for generously donating a portion of each day’s proceeds towards our fundraiser, and thank all of you that attended, or who donated online. We are also grateful to the bands, musicians and artists who performed at our special events including: DJs Trop’a and Mr. Glass, Justin Cox, The Big Poppies (twice!), Fong Tran, The Philharmonik, and The Nickel Slots.

It's fundraising week, so I dedicated this week's program to a discussion among three of KDRT's public-affairs program hosts -- Gitane (right), Lois Richter, and yours truly -- on where they (we) get ideas, what makes a good show, and the spirit of community radio, which can range from ramshackle to polished. Lois co-hosts the Davis Garden Show with Don Shor, plus hosts her own program That's Life. Dr. G hosts Heart to Heart -- and among other things tonight, explains why she can't really give advice on air to people in Davis who might otherwise call with their problems. As she says, microphones are better now than they used to be. Even if a guest with a problem were never named, Davis is still small enough that their voice might be recognized.
