COVID-19 Community Report -Feb 9th, 2021 - Speaking With John Bowes Superintendent for DJUSD

Tue, 02/09/2021 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-DJUSD-John-Bowes.jpg

This month, I'm doing a series on the return to in-person instruction in area schools. This is Part 1, and future episodes will feature teachers, parents, and hopefully students.

My guest for Episode 51, which airs Feb. 9, 2021 is Dr. John Bowes, who has served as superintendent for the Davis Joint Unified School District since July 2016. For the past 30 years, he has led thousands of certificated, classified staff and students throughout the state, working to promote 21st century teaching and learning; to create safe and welcoming campuses; to close achievement and opportunity gaps, and to further the work of diversity, equity and inclusion.

I want to note we recorded this interview last week, on the heels of a school board meeting that lasted until 12:30 am—just one of many long meetings in recent weeks—and in the midst of a several-day website outage that’s part of a widespread external platform problem.

Celtic Songlines Feb 9, 2021- An Interview with Rebecca Lomnicky, Fiddler from Scottish Trio "The Fire"

Mon, 02/08/2021 - 5:44pm | David A. Reynolds

KDRT-Celtic-Songlines-The-Fire-dressed-up (2).jpg

This week we feature The Fire's new album "Marigold" and interview band member Rebecca Lomnicky. The Fire is a high energy traditional music band that combines world class performances of blazing Scottish music with a distinctly Californian flare. The group includes our guest today  International Scottish Fiddle Champion Rebecca Lomnicky, dynamic bagpiper and multi-instrumentalist David Brewer, and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduate Adam Hendey on guitar, bouzouki, and harmonium. All three band members have lived and studied in Scotland, and work together to further contribute to the traditions of Scottish music in America through performances and tours, as well as workshops funded by agencies such as the National Endowment for the Arts.  New releases from artists are a reminder that despite the difficult year musicians continue to create fine music.

COVID-19 Community Report - Feb 2nd, 2021 - Mayor Partida/Healthy Davis Together and Kristin Sky/Teen Mental Health

Tue, 02/02/2021 - 12:40pm | Autumn Labbe-Renault

COVID-19-Gloria-Partida-Healthy-Together-Kristin-02022021.jpg

It's astonishing to me that we're at Episode 50, with nearly 85 people interviewed over the last 10+ months. Thank you to all who have listened and/or supported, agreed to be interviewed, and provided feedback. The stories we tell and the narrative we weave about the impact of the pandemic in Yolo County will be an important part of our collective archives.

On Jan. 30, The New York Times ran a lengthy feature on one community in California and its efforts to model a plan for curtailing the Covid virus. Spoiler alert: that's our community, Davis, CA, and we're on the map as being at the forefront of community engagement and science during the pandemic. One of the benefits of having a world-class university here.

Davisville, Feb. 1, 2021: How to reduce all that conflict we're feeling

Mon, 02/01/2021 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Arrows of conflict.jpg

We have a new president in the White House, but the conflicts that tear at the country haven’t gone away. To do more than separate into groups and shout at each other, we need to do a better job of addressing and resolving conflicts. On today’s Davisville Kara Hunter, executive director of the Yolo Conflict Resolution Center, talks about how to handle conflict, wherever we find it.

She believes the quantity of conflict might not have increased in recent years, but our exposure to it has. Also, people might have become more comfortable sharing their disdain, disappointment and disillusionment.

To address the prevalence of conflict, she’d start in three areas, which she discusses on the show. She’s optimistic that we can get a handle on the problem, but says we’ll need good leaders who demonstrate conflict management, and we’ll need to consider our “will” – when we’re confrontational, are we just venting? Or once that’s done, do we really want to see change?
