Album of the Week (12/8) Akron/Family ~ Love Is Simple

As 2016 comes to a close, I've found myself singing some of the lyrics to the 2007 release by Akron/Family; primarily the words sung in the opener "go out and love, love, love everyone..." which is repeated throughout the bookend tracks (and apparently the recipe for getting through tough times in the world). Or the three words of the album title, which stretch longingly in the 3rd song, Don't Be Afraid, You're Already Dead.

Love Is Simple ~ chaos, rock action, tribal bongo-banging, sentimental sing-alongs and pop gems galore. A cast of thousands live and breed inside... (from the sticker on my shrinkwrap). KDRT is on a mission to raise $5200 for a new antenna to Boost the Signal across Davis. We've talked to listeners, we've tallied  survey results (please fill one out if you haven't yet!), and we know some of you can't hear us very well.

We'd like to remedy that by asking you to Signal Your Support. All donations towards this project are very welcome and needed. We invite you to tune in for some special fundraiser programming starting at 5:30 pm on November 28th through December 5th.

Our guest this week is Austin James Hicks. Born in Berkeley, CA.he has been playing guitar since he was 8 and singing since 10. Why does he do this? To him its simple but he is still searching for the right words.

Not everything in sense of it being all I want to do but simply that it sort of feels like it's interwoven so tightly in all aspects of my life that it almost feels silly to talk about it as if it were separate from anything else I do. I like to think that everyone has that in some way with something. Join me and my mother-in-law as we listen to it and remember the life and career of the poet, singer, novelist, songwriter who died last Monday. If you've never listened to the whole album, you are in for a treat... so many greatest hits compilations are available for Leonard Cohen's work that you can go a long time without revisiting the source. The Davis 2nd Friday ArtAbout for November (11/11/16) will feature TOAD HOLLOW at Armadillo Music at 6:00PM. The interview and performance will start at 6:30PM. Toad Hollow is made up of Davis residents Juniper Waller, Alex Carlin, Jacob Dorn and David Morris. They play a mix of compelling originals and refreshed standards influenced by classic blues and jazz, with some folk and modern R&B mixed in. Their sound is intimate, brimming with raw emotion and a touch of comic relief.
