True strength comes from within, like a constant burning furnace that fuels the body and its limbs. Liz Kat, soultress and lead prowess for The Midnight Dip, started the band with a fiery passion and a cacophony of emotions: anger, sadness, love, and everything in between. She wanted to inspire the world and counter the lack of female representation in the local music scene. It was not always sparkles and sass in the life of Liz Kat. She started playing piano when she was seven years old, and only sang when she was alone. Her shyness hindered her from expressing herself musically up until her late teenage years, when she decided to try to play music with other people. Many fears and experiences later and playing in the shadow of men, she’s decided to take the spotlight for the first time. Her messages have a suggestive twist to them to promote body and sex-positivity to women and to confront gender stereotypes. She has sworn transparency, sharing the truth to heal and help. She hopes to inspire others to reclaim their power and share their stories as well.

Live DiRT returns to the KDRT airwaves when Dug Deep hosts North Bay band Rainbow Girls on Saturday, March 16th at 4:00 pm. Rainbow Girls perform original songs in a soulful, bluesy style. Their latest album is called American Dream. They will be playing at the Veterans Memorial Theatre with local Americana favorites Misner and Smith that evening. For the last couple of years every Friday at Davis Media (and right next to the KDRT studio) young teens have been participating in an animation class. Well you might have guesed we got to know them a bit and a few months ago I asked them to join me this Friday. So lets listen to what these teens share about animation and also play some of their favorite music.

Brenden Tull is a new face to the local music scene. Two years ago he was a nomadic busker, playing guitar on street corners across the west coast. He then spent a year working as a farmhand in Hawaii, growing taro, kava, and bananas. Recently, Tull has returned to his hometown of Davis, California and begun his music career. His songs have been described as "tangled in emotion... what I imagine clouds sing to each other before it starts raining" (Moli O. "The Glass Pianist") and his songwriting deals mostly in the contrasting imagery of beauty and meaning. Tull is currently a bartender at the Root of Happiness and full-time student at Sacramento City College, but hopes to expand his music to a level where he can focus on it full time.
