This months the Davis 2nd Friday ArtAbout features the Smoke Shoveler’s performing live at Armadillo Music. The performance will be broadcast live using the KDRT mobile DIRT technology.

Jack Symes is a singer-songwriter from the LA area but has been living in and performing around the Bay for the last 5 years. A solo act, his music embodies a folky, relaxed tone packed with emotional lyrics and a shaky moustache. Symes recently released his debut EP titled “Gargoyles” and is now out on a 3-month long West Coast tour through April. 

Nat Lefkoff: Born and raised in Davis, California, Nat has since toured up and down the West Coast throughout his high school and college careers with a variety of groups and venues. Nat focuses heavily on lyrics and melody as he composes with the goal of creating music that speaks to the experience of being human as we interact with the changing worlds around us.

This week we'll hear the brand spankin' new self-titled release from California's own Ty Segall. Musically brilliant, prolific, and busy, Segall works solo as well as with the fine bands Fuzz, Broken Bat, and GØGGS, and he's a former member of Sic Alps and others. At live performances nowadays, you'll find him backed by the Freedom Band, which comprises  Mikal Cronin on bass, Charles Moothart on drums, Emmett Kelly on guitar, and Ben Boye on piano. Tune in Thursday, February 2, 5-6 p.m. PT. Jess Goddesse hosts.

Divine Intervention strikes again -- tonight, to be precise, 7-9p PT. We'll continue with new rock/pop/more from this very month/new year, and we'll worship together for Vinyl Vespers -- which will be a play-along song for those of you with kazoo (or comb) in hand!

Tarek Isham found his musical voice while living in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, where music and creativity make daily and deep impressions. Four years ago, he moved back to Clyde Park, Montana to help his mother with her Quarter Horse Ranch and to pursue an education in veterinary medicine, which subsequently brought him to Davis, California. Before moving, he played many nights and weekends in the Bozeman area in a duo called Cottonwood Line. Tarek plays guitar, harmonica, foot-pedal drums and sings songs–both original and old–in country, blues, gospel and folk styles. Look to catch one of his feel-like-dancing live shows and an upcoming demo album under the name Doc Tari, which was the name of a famous Quarter Horse.

Divine Intervention is about to strike the KDRT airwaves. This week, we'll dive again into the January 2017 releases...we'll rock a little, dance a little, love a little, laugh a little... Well, maybe we'll laugh (or cry) a lot over this week's "Vinyl Vespers" feature. Or, then again, maybe it's an amazing and rare find that we can enjoy together, acknowledging that we can't always judge a record by its cover. 

Skeleton Tree is a somber LP, even for Nick Cave.  Its's very atmospheric, with songs that defy the usual verse-chorus-verse of most pop tunes in much the same way as his last release, Push Away the Sky. The lyrics were written by Cave and the music by Cave and Bad Seed Warren Ellis, his chief collaborator since the mid 1990s. While the songs are dark and often sad, reportedly they were written before Cave’s son Arthur passed away unexpectedly in July 2015. The album was released in September 2016 in conjunction with the film One More Time with Feeling, which Cave used as a promotional vehicle rather than doing interviews. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds just stepped off on a world tour last week and will be appearing in Nor Cal on June 24.
