Welcome to a special Live Tracks devoted to the songs of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album was recorded from Nov. 24, 1966 to April 1, 1967. Now, fifty years on, I delve in to the stories behind the songs, paying particular attention to the meaning or motivation of the lyrics of the songs.
On this program you will hear the songs discussed not in the order they appeared on the album, but the order in which the initial recording session occurred. I have consulted many sources in compiling the stories you will hear, and give a brief bibliography toward the end of the program.
Of particular note, if not of merit...at the end of tonights program I use a manual turntable and a 1967 Parlophone release of the album to play the recording in the playout groove of side two. It is gibberish, put there at the behest of Paul McCartney. |

Today I played more swing music from the 30s and 40s. My dear husband had digitized many old records onto CDs -- so that my Mom could listen to them even tho she had lost much of her vision and couldn't operate a record player any more. We ended up with 4 CDs, but none of the standard info about the songs. (So I can't tell you title, artist, or even album/single.) So let's just enjoy the music ...

It's so nice to be back on air. We have been having some pretty big storms but it's been needed water. The five year drought was tooooo long. Well, today's reading is from "Roughing It" by Mark Twain, Chapters 9 and 10. If you ever wondered about the Pony Express, here's your chance to hear the story from men "on the ground." That's what Twain said about himself...he was there for the Gold and Silver strikes, and the Pony Express, and all the rest of the 1800's.
