Christmas (sometimes spelled Xmas) was originally, and still is for most, a Christian religious holiday.
Xmas (sometimes spelled Christmas) is often a secular celebration of family and gifting -- a holiday that is particularly enjoyed by children.
Both Christmas and Xmas exist. Both can involve songs and music.
This show "That's Xmas Music in December" is a sampling of the music we might hear in December each year -- some religious, some secular.
These songs are from CDs that were left over after all KDRT's "Community Garage Sale" fundraiser in fall 2019. I kept them out to share with you now and in the future. (There is more than enough Xmas music songs here to make several shows!)

Seasonal music from CDs donated to a KDRT fundraiser and gotten by Lois afterward to use in December shows.
We start with "Omnis mundus jocundetur" performed by Choir of East Helsinki Music Institute (on YliesRadio) and "Traditional carols from the Tatras Mountains" performed by Jan Karpiel Group (on Polish Radio). Both are off the CD "Music for Christmas: A concert of festive music from around Europe" (a BBC special compilation CD of live or radio performances -- 25 songs, with only 2 sung in English.) |

Did you know that she lived in Davis in the 1970s? I had the pleasure of meeting her then, carrying her very first album in my store (Davis Wo/men's Book), and watching her career take off. She moved from Davis to the Bay Area long ago and toured for many years before changing gears in 2015 to do integrative counseling. |
11/21 and 11/28/2019 -- replayed my "Margie Adam, part 1" show. Don Shor added an opening "donation pitch" for pledge week (when Lois had a cold) and (because Lois wasn't here to change the Alt settings) this same show played for our Thanksgiving break.

Did you know that she lived in Davis in the 1970s? I had the pleasure of meeting her then, carrying her very first album in my store (Davis Wo/men's Book), and watching her career take off. She moved from Davis to the Bay Area long ago and toured for many years before changing gears in 2015 to do integrative counseling. Today' program featured pieces from three early albums -- "Margie Adam. Songwriter", "Naked Keys", and "Soon and Again" -- interspersed with remembrances and readings from some of Margie's essays. We didn't get too far today, so look for a 'part 2' in later weeks.

This week Lois read the promo paragraphs on some of the stations many CDs. Where there were no promo stickers, she read the title and described the cover art, or read from the inside text. Why? Just as a teaser for folks to come and buy CDs at the garage sale on 16 November.
BUT... It turned out that she was looking in the WRONG BOX and the items read in this show were NOT FOR SALE. They are all still available to play on-air by any DJ who wants to play them.
So... If you hear something interesting here, contact your favorite DJ and request that band be included it in a future show.

Renowned science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson is an opinionated person. And a thoughful one. And a great researcher. But mostly he is a very fine writer. Of the many many books he has written and published since the 1980s, my favorite is "The Years of Rice and Salt", set in an alternate world where the Plague killed 90% of northern Europe leaving empty land to be resettled by people from further south and east. This book is a series of about a dozen novellas tied together by a cast of characters who get reincarnated in different parts of the world and different circumstances and cultures. A most fascinating book!
