Ryan Scott Long "beats" his way to appear on Listening Lyrics Friday, September 23, 2016 at 4:00PM

Ryan Scott Long vists Listening Lyrics on KDRT, kdrt, listening lyrics, Pieter Pastoor,

Drummer/composer Ryan Scott Long continues his life long fascination with music that's led him to study drumming and improvisation with Scott Amendola, Simon Lott, Hamir Atwal, Joshua Smith & William Woodley and many other greats.

With his forward-thinking approach powering what may be an exciting new style of drumming, there's a bright future in store for Ryan as he continues to make his mark.

Ryan has recorded/played with Mike Sopko(Bill Laswell, Dosh), Thomas Pridgen(ex The Mars Volta), Vir McCoy(Hamsa Lila, ex Mickey Hart Band), Michael James Booker, Sam Johnson Band, Beforia, Limnus, Scott Barkan, Delphi Freeman, Anna Borja, Joshua Smith(ex Peter Rowan) & many more.

Most recently Ryan released “Just Like We Used To” with his band BroJazz in May of 2016. BroJazz features Ryan on drums, Ben Wallace-Ailsworth on bass and renowned saxophonist Joshua Smith. Oz Fritz describes BroJazz as “a shapeshifting experiment in postmodern jazz that can change course from a heavy, industrial, noisy, trance groove to soft, light, sweet, delicate, waterfall melodies in the blink of an eye; spin your sensibility 180 degrees then drop you off back home with lyrical tenderness and a wink and a smile.”

Who knows in what record bin he was languishing, but we've rescued him for tonight's worship service. As for the other guy—the one you either recognize or feel you should—we'll be spinning a tune from a record that sports the most-racy of his album covers. Tune in to find out more on these men, new music, and other assorted fun on Divine Intervention, broadcasting live 7-9p Pacific. For replay info, visit the program page.

Album Review: I Was on the Moon, by Owen Plant

I Was on the Moon, Owen Plant

I Was on the Moon

I Was on the Moon is the 7th release by Owen Plant, a folk-pop artist from Georgia with a 15 year career. The folk side of Plant takes center stage on his latest release, a melancholy set of laidback, introspective folk songs. The tunes are emotional but not distraught, optimistic but not exuberant, exhibiting small-town charm alongside radio friendly melodies. Overall, the album offers melancholy vibes to put the listener into a peaceful state of mind. The best track on the album is probably "Riverside," a song about finding peace and happiness by living the simple life "down by the riverside," as the chorus sings. "Unfettered Untied" is another fun and upbeat standout, while the slow, deliberate yet thoroughly enjoyable track "Ride With Me" allows Plant to display his considerable vocal talents. The final track on the album is a surreal, mysterious, and nearly pyschadelic take on Bill Withers' classic song "Ain't No Sunshine." For fans of folk artists such as Ben Harper and Amos Lee, I Was on the Moon is definitely an enjoyable and reccommendable listen.

Michael Musial visits KDRT

This week a local treasure visited Listening Lyrics. Michail Musial. He shows us American Primitive guitar playing and WOW did he ever. One fantastic hour

Although a classically trained pianist, and piano technician by trade, Michael's primary musical interest is playing guitar. His style is American Primitive, a genre pioneered by the guitarist John Fahey. He can be heard playing American Primitive covers, original arrangements of cover songs and a few original instrumentals as well. Originally from Pennsylvania, Michael moved to California in 2003 and currently lives in Vacaville, CA. Listen in as we learn about his passion, his music and his life.

Here is a short clip of Michael playing in the studio https://youtu.be/3hWZ9QBup8g

Hi-Nobles photo

This week's AotW is The Hi-Nobles album Shake, released on Zaentz Record in 2009. This is the first and only offering from the Nobles, a San Francisco band containing no less than Scotty Holderby of Mordred and Greg Ingraham of The Avengers. Tune in at 5 pm PT on Thursday, September 8, for music Verbicide astutely described as "Sixties-styled, organ-fueled, fuzzed-out garage soul that couldn’t get any more R&B stuffed into it even with a shoehorn." Jess Goddesse is your hostesse.

Gary Chew: Third Streaming (Friday 9/9)

Be ready for musical fun when the genius of Mozart is tampered with a bit on Third Streaming with Gary Chew this week on K-dirt. It starts Friday at 3 PM on 95.7, and streaming online at the KDRT website (podcasts too). A lesser known but terrific singer named Meredith D'Ambrosio will sing her very own words set to a memorable melody by Dave Brubeck. Again, Gary shows his bias for Brazilian music and gives you a taste of the music of 20th century American composer William Schuman. Yes, it's more stuff that can only be considered music to your ears. Check the KDRT website for air times and days of the week. You won’t be sorry.
