Going with what fell into place this morning because I got back late last night from a beach on the Sea of Cortez where the waves roll in shallow and a turquoise blue, and the natives live in motorhomes 100 feet from shore, and few tourists come because it's 10 miles down a dirt road, and the ocean cradles you like a fish as you snorkel in search of sea turtles and the fish tacos are tasty and the Coronas are cold ...

He remains there for a long time, starting at the blue, motionless and stiff, as if in a

In honor of the 2011 Davis Feminist Film Festival Thursday and Friday, the April 12 program of Jazz After Dark (8 pm) is a tribute to the great women of jazz: female jazz vocalists spanning the 20th Century and beyond. We’ll start with Bessie Smith (1894 – 1937) and finish with Norah Jones.

Say “media,” and what comes to mind? The word encompasses so much, and all of it at risk. News outlets are struggling, public broadcasting is under attack, a free and open Internet is imperiled, and community media centers much like Davis Media Access (DMA) are closing their doors across the country. DMA’s doors are, thankfully, open and accessible to all, but—we need you to help us keep them open with your support of DMA’s annual fund raising campaign. The Sound of the Sun

It makes one all right, though you hadn’t thought of it,
A sound like the sound of the sky on fire, like Armageddon,
Whistling and crackling, the explosions of sunlight booming
As the huge mass of gas rages into the emptiness around it.
It isn’t a sound you are often aware of, though the light speeds
To us in seconds, each dawn leaping easily across a chasm
Of space that swallows the sound of that sphere, but
If you listen closely some morning, when the sun swells
Over the horizon and the world is still and still asleep,
You might hear it, a faint noise so far inside your mind
That it must come from somewhere, from light rushing to darkness,
Energy burning towards entropy, towards a peaceful solution,
Burning brilliantly, spontaneously, in the middle of nowhere,
And you, too, must make a sound that is somewhat like it,
