Jazz After Dark February 17th, 2015

Honoring Jimmy Scott tonight. The great jazz ballad singer had a career in two parts: from the late 1940’s to the mid-60’s, and then again from 1991, when he was rediscovered, to about 2004. Jimmy Scott died in June 2014 at the age of 88. In his career he sang with Lionel Hampton and Charlie Parker, among many others, and was much admired by Billie Holiday and Ray Charles. Inexplicably, he was omitted from the 2015 Grammy Awards ‘In Memoriam’ segment.  So to remember Jimmy Scott, or perhaps to introduce his unique phrasing and style to a new audience, we’re featuring him in our first half hour tonight with selections from 1949, 1960,1992, and 1998.
