Joe Kye appears on Listening Lyrics this Friday 9/25/15

This show will be a treat. A refreshingly authentic artist with a unique sound and story. Joe Kye is a violinist-looper-songwriter and leader of the Sacramento band Joseph in the Well. Born in Seoul, Korea, raised in Seattle, Joe draws upon an eclectic array of influences, like rock, jazz, classical, and world music. Featuring violin, lush string loops, upright bass, and percussion, Joseph in the Well's unique sound has been influenced by artists including Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens, and Miles Davis. Joseph in the Well was recently awarded 2015 “Outstanding New Artist” and “Artist of the Year” by Sacramento News & Review’s Sammies Music Awards. Kye draws upon his immigrant upbringing for much of his songwriting.

For those outside the listening area, the show will stream live online at KDRT.org at 4:00PM (9/25/15). It will also be available for replays in the show archives or as an podcast on iTunes under LISTENING LYRICS.

Fugazi, The Argument - Album of the Week (9/24/15)

Thu, 09/24/2015 - 7:19am | Justin Cox

This is the best Fugazi album. A perfect mix of experimentation, loudness, melody and flow. Although I had heard of the DC-based band Fugazi and knew they were imporant, I didn't grow up listening to them. I heard this album (their last) when my straight-edge/vegan/cooler-than-everybody-else roommate bought it the day it was released during my first year of college (one month after 9/11) and threw it immediately on repeat.

I was prepping myself to dislike it because I didn't really love him a whole lot. But it knocked my socks off! I immediately dug into their catalog and found plenty to love, but this one will always be my favorite.

Listen to 95.7fm in you're in Davis or click the "Listen Now" button at the top left of this page at 5pm if you're not. Show airs on Thursday, September 24 and there will be no archived permalink to listen later.

Davisville, 9/21/15: A look at the Nishi Gateway

Mon, 09/21/2015 - 6:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Nishi Gateway location map

Nishi Gateway location map

The $300 milion Nishi Gateway project would be a major addition to Davis. It would build research space, offices, housing for rent and for sale, and a relatively small amount of retail on what’s now vacant land southwest of downtown and next to UC Davis. Davis voters, through a citywide ballot, could vote yes or no on the project as soon as June 2016. Sustainable design, jobs, traffic, population growth, the local economy, partnerships with UC Davis--this project touches on all these recurring Davis issues. Today we discuss its ins & outs with the project's managing partner, Tim Ruff of Davis.

Davisville, 9/7/15: Understanding the new J & Covell

Mon, 09/07/2015 - 6:05pm | Bill Buchanan

Bike rider and J & Covell

Been through the new “Dutch intersection” at J and Covell yet? The city rebuilt this busy crossroads near the new Cannery housing development in order to slow and improve the safety of right-hand turns by cars and trucks, make bicyclists more visible, and shorten the distance that cyclists and pedestrians must cross to clear the traffic lanes. It represents the continued reshuffle of bikes, cars and foot traffic in Davis, and there’s more to come. On today’s show we talk about the intersection, how it works, feedback from its first month, and what’s next, with Robb Davis, Davis mayor pro tem and an experienced bicyclist himself.

Ruby Mountain String Band to appear on Listening Lyrics 8/28/15 at 4:00PM

Wed, 08/26/2015 - 11:47am | Pieter Pastoor

Ever heard of  "Old time Americana Fusion" want to know what it sounds like? Join us with the Ruby Mountain String Band. Once upon a time, in a town called Haiku (spelled backwards) four devotees of trad music bumped into each other in an organic food co-op; one was a cellist, one a fiddler, two played guitars, banjoes and sang. A banjo player and guitarist also favored song writing. All liked CapeBreton/scottish fiddle tunes. So, how many musicians walked into the co-op?.

Cliff Landis - Guitar, Vocals, Banjo and Fiddle, Julia Landis - Guitar, Vocals, Darin Smith - Cello, other things.
