Alex Roth is 'Leaving Las Davis,' on Listening Lyrics, Jan. 10, 2025

Fri, 01/10/2025 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

IMG_3694.jpeg

We start the new year with Alex Roth saying goodbye to his adopted city. The moment is at times emotional and uplifting. You also can say goodbye as he will perform the "Leaving Las Davis" show at Sudwerk on Thursday Jan. 16, 2025, at 9 p.m.

Alex Roth is a cherished icon in Davis, where genuine community impactors are few and far between. He stands among the exceptional. His musical prowess and generous spirit are legendary; his performances have graced countless local benefits, including the momentous celebration for the start of KDRT in 2004.

Remember his unique enterprise? Alex, powered solely by his own legs, delivered his meticulously hand-roasted coffee throughout Davis, his bicycle becoming a symbol of connection, a ritual weaving the town's fabric together with the rich aroma of his exceptional brew.

To know Alex was to befriend him, to be touched by his kindness, to be enriched. Now, as he embarks on his overseas adventure, Davis will miss his unique presence. Alex, you have indelibly shaped Davis's character; you've made it a better place. From all of us at KDRT: Farewell, and thank you for the enduring legacy you leave behind.

Davisville, Jan. 6, 2025: Checking in with Weitzel and Dunning, half a year after they exited the Enterprise

Mon, 01/06/2025 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

.jpeg

This week on Davisville we hear from Wendy Weitzel and Bob Dunning (in photo at the new KDRT studio), colleagues who exited the Davis Enterprise in mid-2024 and recreated their work on Substack. We talk about their readership and fast success, which has held up during the intervening months and has roots in their skills as local journalists with deep knowledge of Davis.

We also get an update from Brian Bolz, a Davis tech entrepreneur who helped them get started on Substack last summer. Although no longer active in their ventures, he also looked into starting a local news project he called Local Press. He has put it aside to focus on his other work, but “I still feel there is an opportunity for a sustainable business model to succeed at the local level (in addition to solo publications like Bob and Wendy’s),” he wrote in an email. “Should a trusted, credible package be offered, I think paid subscribers would show up for it.”

Today we get an update on Dunning and Weitzel's parts of the ongoing change in Davis media.
