Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Live Friday 11am-1pm
Replays Sunday 9-11am

Davisville, July 7, 2025: SF Mime Troupe returns to Davis with its latest sharp satire

Mon, 07/07/2025 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Michael Gene Sullivan.jpg

The San Francisco Mime Troupe wants to entertain and challenge audiences with live satire, but Michael Gene Sullivan, the writer, director and an actor for this year’s show — Disruption: A Musical Farce — says he aims for more than two-dimensional hilarity.

“I’m very much against the pie-throwing satire of ‘here’s my enemy, I set him up, create a straw man, make fun of him, set fire to him,’ ” he says on this week’s Davisville. “When I was describing the [regular working-class cop] character [in the play] to someone, they were like, ‘I don’t want this guy to be a hero.’ I said, ‘he’s not a hero, but he’s not a villain, either.’ He’s totally understandable.…” (Sullivan plays the part in the play; the photo shows him in costume)

The nonprofit can't currently afford its former big summer tours, but has kept Davis on its annual circuit. This year they’ll perform July 10 in the Brunelle theater in Davis. Tickets are free but they ask viewers to donate $20 apiece.

The joy of sax! The Audio Ecotone for June 27, 2025

Fri, 06/27/2025 - 4:56pm | Eddy Owt

Harry_Gold_contrabass_sax_1996.jpg

On June 28, 1846, Belgian musician and inventor Adophe Sax was granted a patent for his new instrument called the saxophone. The horn was designed to project as well as a brass instrument, while retaining the harmonic feeling of a woodwind. While the horn gained some adoption in the military, ragtime and vaudville bands, it wasn't until the 1920s jazz boom that the foundation for the sax's place in popular music was established.

On the eve of the 179th anniversary of Sax's patent, The Audio Ecotone celebrates the saxophone with a wide-ranging selection of music from Charlie Parker, Albert Ayler, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Moon Hooch and a whole host of others.

(Sorry, no Yakety Sax on the playlist.)

Listen live at 3 p.m. Friday on 95.7 FM in Davis or kdrt.org. The show repeats Saturday at 6 p.m. and Tuesday at 7 a.m.

That is what today's Listening Lyrics is about -- six lost-but-found guitars owned by Zakk Wylde, Peter Frampton, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Bill Corgan and Paul McCartney. Each has a fantastc journey.
