Join Wayne Hagan and take a musical journey down the Golden Road and explore the music of the Grateful Dead, its roots, and its many offshoots. Past DJs include Alligator, Lee Maddex, and Rod Moseanko. What a long strange trip!

The Golden Road for 7:00pm on Dec 14th, 2018Mon, 12/17/2018 - 11:25am | Lee MaddexThis week the Golden Road takes us back to Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin for the Grateful Dead and their second set from July 7th, 1984. This is a very fine second set from the very fine 1984 Summer Tour, and the Not Fade Away>Turn On Your Love Light>Not Fade Away is not to be missed! |
The Golden Road for 7:30pm on Dec 14th, 2018Fri, 12/14/2018 - 9:05pm | Lee Maddex |
The Golden Road for 7:30pm on Dec 7th, 2018Thu, 12/13/2018 - 10:10pm | Lee Maddex |
The Golden Road for 7:00pm on Dec 7th, 2018Fri, 12/07/2018 - 9:05pm | Lee MaddexThis week on the Golden Road, we have a little Miles Davis & John Coltrane from their last tour in 1960, a big dose the Grateful Dead from Seattle May 21, 1974 (a forty-seven-minute Playing In The Band in fact!) and the Great American Music Hall, and a taste of Santana’s Borboletta. |
The Golden Road for 7:00pm on Nov 30th, 2018Fri, 11/30/2018 - 9:05pm | Lee MaddexThis week the Golden Road takes us back to the Pittsburgh, Pa, the Steel City, for Grateful Dead music recorded live at the celebrated Stanley Theatre on Friday November 30, 1979. Brent Mydland was the new guy and the new energy he brought to the Grateful Dead was immediate and abounds at this show. Friday night with the Dead, it doesn’t get any better than that! Oh yeah did I mention the killer Scarlet>Fire? |
The Golden Road for 7:00pm on Nov 23rd, 2018Fri, 11/23/2018 - 9:05pm | Lee MaddexThis week on the Golden Road, with a nod to Thanksgiving, we have a little of this and a little of that, kind of like diving into leftovers on Friday. We have a nice chunk of the new Dave's Picks 28 from June 17, 1976, Willie Nelson, Lukas Nelson, Marty Robbins, Tim O’Brien, Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, the Band and track or two from the LP Skakedown Street released forty years ago last week. |
The Golden Road for 7:00pm on Nov 16th, 2018Fri, 11/16/2018 - 9:05pm | Lee MaddexThis week on the Golden Road, we are taking a trip back to late Fall 1969 for a mix of Grateful Dead music recorded live at the New Old Fillmore (after Bill Graham closed down the Fillmore Auditorium in 1968, the venue reopened sometime in 1969 as the New Old Fillmore). This week’s music is culled from the November 8th (Dick Latvala’s favorite show!) and December 20-21 shows and features several songs by the one and only Ron “Pigpen” McKernan! Call the Fillmore Auditorium by any name, but these shows must have felt like old home week for the band and their playing was very inspired! Now get ready to dig the Pig! |
The Golden Road for 7:30pm on Nov 9th, 2018Fri, 11/09/2018 - 9:05pm | Lee MaddexSunday November 11th, 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, “the war to end all wars.” Armistice occurred at: “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918,” and the first Armistice Day (now Veterans Day) was November 11th, 1919, one year later. Because of the singular importance of the Armistice centennial (and for Veterans Day), we thought it only appropriate that this week on the Golden Road, we have a selection of music from the Grateful Dead’s November 11th, 1973 show at the Winterland. This was the third and final night of a three show Winterland run and highlights some classic 1973 Grateful Dead! Happy Veterans Day! |
The Golden Road for 7:00pm on Nov 2nd, 2018Fri, 11/02/2018 - 9:05pm | Lee MaddexThis week the Golden Road returns to one of our favorite venues, the Rochester War Memorial for Grateful Dead music recorded live on November 7th, 1985. The RWM was the scene of many great GD shows in the seventies and eighties. Sadly, this show and the following night were the last Dead shows at this venerable hall. The hit Touch Of Grey spelled the end to shows at the smaller more intimate venues and arenas and stadiums were the only venues large enough to handle the new audience. Tonight’s show was smack dab in the middle of the very well-played 1985 Fall tour. While the setlist is pretty standard 80s fare but the Boys were having fun on this night and the music reflects this. Jerry’s voice is a little rough here and there (it was much better than the Summer tour), but he made up for this with some outstanding playing. Plus we will hear a touch of Richmond November 1st, 1985. |
The Golden Road for 7:00pm on Oct 26th, 2018Fri, 10/26/2018 - 9:05pm | Lee MaddexThis week on the GR we are featuring the GD’s October 31, 1971 Halloween show recorded live at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Ohio. This is our nod to many folks old and young’s favorite holiday, Halloween! The second set from this show was released as DP 2 way back in 1995 and features the marvelous melodic DS>Sug Mag with the Tighten Up Jam. But what is really cool is that the whole show recently came into circulation. So, this evening we hear the better part of the first set (mostly the all then brand-new songs) and the entire second set. This show was the last show of ten with the new guy KG on keys. Pig of course was convalescing but rejoined the band on Dec 1 in Boston. |

We are now up to the third host on Golden Road. How can KDRT have three winners in a row? Alligator is the latest star lighting the way down the Road, and an informed host he is bringing bits of Dead history and info to add to the show fun. Tune in for a good time.
Thanks to Lee for bringing some great vintage Dead to our ears! We love the program!
