Their Friday & Saturday shows at Mondavi this past weekend were the inspiration behind this installment of Civilization Phaze IV. I picked out some of the weird and wonderful offerings the percussion/classical world has to offer (including a couple throwbacks to my undergrad years at UCSD with some Red Fish Blue Fish & Pierzak), some of my favorite symphonic works ("Death of Tybalt" from Prokofiev's R&J), BACH & GLASS, and of course, a few of So Percussion. This weekend reaffirmed my love for percussion-based music and now I get to share it with y'all! |

Hi Eunah,
Can you give us the the track titles played for the 07/28/15 show?
After the Beethoven Op. 127, there's a woman singing and I don't think the piece was announced and my phone can't ID the track.
Thanks so much for doing these shows! I've listened to almost all of them. I wish KDRT would enable comments on individual show posts! (Also descriptive show titles vs just the dates would be easier to remember/find, looking for past favorites.)
Especially have enjoyed being introduced to the Franjo Krežma: Scherzino, I think I got the overtone/harmonics craziness in Huun-Huur-Tu - Orphan's Lament and the Starker/Bartok Folk Dances from you too.
Thanks!
Ben
Thank you so much for listening to my show! Your words totally made my day :)
I can actually edit the show titles and include tracklists so I will do that more diligently from now on (especially since now I know someone is out there actually looking for that info)!
Here's the tracklist for the July 28 show:
Let me know if you have any special requests for my show (pieces, composers, themes, etc)...
Cheers!
Eunah
Awesome, thanks for the track listing! That's the vocal piece, yes!
These aren't requests but if you haven't heard them, Kronos Quartet also transcribed/recorded Bill Evans, thinking of "Peace Piece" in particular. Also the other day I heard this for the first time: search YouTube for "black page solo piano version"...
I totally have a theme request but listeners might not appreciate it and it might be a challenge: tuning temperament/historical tunings, or a theme about how music is either conceptualized or heard differently today vs. when older composers wrote the pieces we listen to (e.g. I liked when you did the gut vs. steel string Bach cello suite comparison). There's a great video on YouTube "Piano Tuner Shows Classical Repertoire Performed in Historical Tunings", it's a trip.
In response to the puzzle you posed on your first show....Is "Civilization Phaze IV" a reference to Frank Zappa's last album "Civilization Phaze III"?
Just asking.
Paul
Yes that's right!
