CoViD-19 intro and general info ...
Today's show is meant to inform listeners of the true information about the current medical crisis -- Coronavirus Disease 2019 (CoViD-19) -- without panic, rumors, or sales pitches. (There's too much mis-information out in the world already!) For accurate and current info, I recommend the website of the CDC -- Centers for Disease Control -- at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/
Just to clarify some terminology (per the CDC) ...
** "Coronavirus" is a GROUP of viruses which include several that are common in humans (such as some cold viruses), others that are common in some other mammals, and some that are established in humans but not common (such as MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV).
** "Nova Coronavirus" (sometimes spelled "Novel Coronavirus") means a NEW [nova in Latin] virus in humans. It is either newly discovered or newly crossed into humans.
** Each coronavirus causes an illness that has it's own name. MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) which was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012 is caused by a virus named "MERS-CoV". SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) was first reported in Asia in February 2003 and is caused by a virus named "SARS-CoV".
** The virus found in China in 2019 has been named "SARS-CoV-2", and
** "COVID-19" (Coronavirus Disease 2019) is the name of the illness caused by that virus.
** Sometimes the virus or the disease have been called Chinese coronavirus, Nova coronavirus, or 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The CDC and WHO have settled on "CoViD-19" to name the illness and "SARS-CoV-2" to name the actual virus.
I will be sharing the latest announcements from CDC, Yolo County, and other scientific organizations at the opening of my radio show every week until the crisis is over. (There are other KDRT radio hosts who will be interviewing experts from UCD on their shows.)
Good news!
A posting on the Yolo County's website at: https://www.yolocounty.org/coronavirus
says in part: "As of March 1, 2020, there are NO* confirmed cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-2019) in Yolo County. The result for the UC Davis student that was tested for COVID-19 came back negative on 2/29/20. This student and the other two UC Davis students under quarantine have been released."
And no cases had been reported in Yolo County as of 5 March 2020. (PS: UCD MEd Center is actually in Sacramento.)
