Join Pieter and Jesse on New Year’s Eve at 5 PM for a very special 2-hour, combined edition of Dead Wax and The Grapevine. In the first hour, we’ll reflect on end of 2014 and the end of America’s longest war with some of our favorite anti-war and protest songs. In the second hour, we’ll lift our spirits as we prepare to ring in 2015!
As our military begins to transition roles from combat to support (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/12/28/373597845/ceremony-in-afghanistan-officially-ends-americas-longest-war), we’ll reflect on the decision makers and the consequences for our 13-year war through song. Many of our favorite artists put words to our emotions and sentiments better than we can express ourselves. We’ll feature some classic songs from Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Bruce Springsteen, and Black Sabbath. We’ll also hear from Merle Haggard, Todd Snider, Old Crow Medicine Show, and many more! Literature from returning soldiers and survivors in Iraq and Afghanistan provide food for thought (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/26/books/human-costs-of-the-forever-wars-enough-to-fill-a-bookshelf.html?_r=0).
In the second half of the show, we’ll celebrate 2015 in a positive way. We’ll play songs that reflect on what we can do as individuals to create a difference and shape a happier, more peaceful future. Some of the songs are inspired by a recent, short, Robert Reich You Tube video, which touches on how, as individuals, we can help to change the world that we live in (https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=921193401226590&fref=nf). We’ll play songs from: Joe Cocker, The Nickel Slots, Shovels and Rope, Jesse Harris, and many more.
