Women's Music Nite Returns

The Women’s Music Nite series returns to Common Grounds on Saturday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. with Rita Hosking, Duval Speck, and Mary Madison. Everyone is welcome to attend this showcase of memorable and enjoyable music that started in 1978 and has featured women songwriters from around the world. Past performers include the most talented local, regional, and east coast musicians, as well as many international acts from a variety of countries, many with the most prestigious songwriting awards. They include a Grammy and Tony winner, and several songwriters who were later chosen to tour with famous national and international acts. Yet when asked what performances they have enjoyed the most, many performers have named the Women’s Music Nite series as one of their favorites, the respectful and enthusiastic audiences being often mentioned as a stand-out. In an intimate and comfortable atmosphere, the series has endured and nourished musicians and audience alike.

Featured performer Rita Hosking (www.ritahosking.com) was raised in the mountains of Shasta County, Northern California, where she internalized dusty woodsheds, the scent of springwater, forest fires and the troubles of rural economies. Her musical experience began as a child at church, and under the wings of an old time jug band made up of seasoned mountain characters. A descendant of Cornish miners who sang in the mines, Rita grew up with deep regard for folk music and the power of the voice. Rita Hosking’s original roots music ranges from bluegrass-tinged drive to soulful ballads. Her songs convey mountain stories with a voice that evokes the power of people and place. "Rita Hosking is an up and coming songbird with a style of her own, combining the best of Gillian Welch, Hazel Dickens and Iris DeMent with a delivery that calls for an encore every time" (Dennis Brunnenmeyer, host of KVMR’s “Nevada City Limits“). “From the first time I heard Rita sing, her voice gripped me and did not let go; a voice whose beauty speaks from a deep place of honest and raw and powerful emotion. Rita’s messages are immediate yet patient and her quiet conviction most strong. Her sound is real, reflective and compassionate... and just beginning. I’m excited to see her music flow out of her and into all of us” (Joe Craven, multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire). Rita has performed at the Palms Playhouse, the Stage Door, the San Francisco Bluegrass Festival, The Jupiter, and the Folk Alliance Conference to name a few.

Also performing will be Duval Speck (Linda Duval and Cathy Speck) specialize in intricate musical endeavors, memorable original songs, soaring harmonies, and their own unique interpretation of classic songs that span a wide range of styles. Described as “specializing in everything…and then some”, their past performances include The Palms, Oprah Winfrey’s Oxygen Tank Tour, Luna’s Café, and the Cabaret show at Club 21. Duval Speck are also the founders of the popular dance band “The Essentials”, known regionally for getting everyone up and dancing in the Tahoe resorts, the Los Angeles Radisson penthouse, at the Sacramento Rainbow Festival, Picnic in the Park, and more. Joining Duval Speck for a short set will be Mary Madison, a gifted songwriter and vocalist whose stirring and well-crafted songs have been a big hit at past performances.

The Women’s Music Nite series is held at Common Grounds Coffee in Davis, 2171 Cowell Blvd. There is a $5 - $10 sliding scale cover charge at the door (pay as much as you can afford), all ages are welcome and music-loving kids 12 and under are free. Common Grounds has a livingroom-like atmosphere, complete with comfortable chairs and couches, and regular seating.
