The Grapevine shines the spotlight on Marvin Gaye's epic masterpiece, "What's Goin' On". Easily one of the most influential and landmark albums in the history of soul music, it is also regarded by many as one of the greatest albums ever made in the 20th Century. For this broadcast, you hear "What's Goin' On" in it's entirety along with a handful of Marvin Gaye's early and later sounds.
Here's a good look at what WAS goin' on...an excellent vid of Marvin playing live and some good images of inner city street life in the early 1970's. Note that some of the finest musicians ever to grace a recording studio, The Funk Brothers, are in his band. In particular, some rare footage of the legendary James Jamerson laying down the classic bass lines on the albums title track. Enjoy!
