In this first broadcast of 2012, The Golden Road weaves a tapestry of sound from the Haight/Ashbury in San Francisco circa 1967 with some of Jefferson Airplane's very best music...full of imagery, wonderful words and sounds of a time that certainly left it's mark for the long run. Also included is some of the first of Paul Kantner's vision of a place & time that was not of this Earth via "Blows Against The Empire"...essentially when the Airplane became the Starship...and we ain't talkin' Mickey Thomas here! And let us not forget one of the best albums to hail from collaborative efforts in the Bay Area..."If I Could Only Remember My Name" by David Crosby & Friends.
Of course, there is also the good ol' Grateful Dead with an epic set from the Fillmore East on 2/11/69. Bill Graham gets his bronzed cowbell and we all get some Primal Dead. Life is good!
Here's a really cool vid from perhaps the oddest gig the Grateful Dead ever played...Hugh Hefner's "Playboy After Dark". Hugh tried to set up a scene to show that Playboy was "hip" and brought in the Dead to do it. The band and their crew worked in some classic pranksterism (oh! the stories that came out of that one!!!) and laid down a real nice version of Mountains Of The Moon. Dig it:
