When the Beatles touched down in New York on February 7, 1964 for their first visit to America, they brought with them a sound--and a look--that was new. Their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show ignited a frenzy that spawned huge changes in music, fashion and popular culture. Their music has become timeless and influential, and the youth culture that was born at that time has had lasting impact on this country.
To celebrate, on February 6th, Davis Media Access and Davis Odd Fellows present a benefit concert featuring Rubber Souldiers and opening with original tunes- The Loose Acoustic Trio (see end of this article for time & hall address).Â

Rubber Souldiers, fronted by Lorin Rowan, David Gans and Chris Rowan, are a "Beatles jam band," interpreting the great work of the Fab Four for the modern stage. As Gans explains, "The Beatles made all these great songs with kick-ass grooves, and then they quit 'em after three minutes! So in the grand San Francisco tradition, we're stretching them out and stringing them together. And of course, with the Rowan Brothers at the microphone, you know the vocals are going to be top-notch as well."
With Gans and the Rowans on guitars and vocals, the Souldiers are rounded out by bassist Paul Knight and drummer CC Dawson. The group was born a few years ago at Berkeley's KPFA-FM, where Gans hosts a show; the Rowans were performing "Sing Out" with host Larry Kelp. Gans heard them sing the Beatles' "Baby's In Black" and after the show the trio ran through a stack of Beatle songs, just singing for the fun of it. Since that meeting, Rubber Souldiers have performed everywhere from San Francisco's Jerry Garcia Amphitheater to Florida's MagnoliaFest.
The original Rowan Brothers started their career in the 1970s, setting their signature harmonies to Americana standards as well as their own bold original songs. In 2003 their two-CD set, "Now and Then," received a rave reception from listeners around the world. Their sound is a potent mixture of bluegrass-flavored folk and Everlys/Louvins/Stanleys-inspired rockabilly.
David Gans, singer-songwriter and radio host, just released a studio CD titled "The Ones That Look The Weirdest Taste The Best." On stage he mixes his own compositions with favorites by an array of folk and rock artists, often with social and political underpinnings. He often uses a digital looping device as an aid to improvisation. www.dgans.com
The Loose Acoustic Trio opens the evening. Described as an American original, since the turn of the 21st century they have deftly blended Folk, Cajun, Old-Time Country, Blues, Jug Band, and Ragtime music to create an appealing sound they call “Good Time Music.†Their latest release, Sorrow Be Gone (Big Book Records 2008), is no exception. The songs range from simply sublime to sublimely ridiculous, each wrapped up in an infectious rhythm that’s guaranteed to make you smile. Lyrics address such topics as the fury of Mother Nature, bad hair, flying fish, love, and pizza. The combination of accordion, 6-string banjo, bedpandolin (a mandolin forged from a metal bedpan), upright string bass and three part vocal harmonies, sets them apart from any other musical group on the face of planet Earth. It’s a traditional roots style with a contemporary twist.
