Celebrate City of Davis’s newest piece of public art...“Solar Filling Station”

On August 22, at 5:30 p.m. the public is invited to participate in the dedication ceremony for the City of Davis’s newest piece of public art, titled “Solar Filling Station”. The project was launched as a result of a grant from Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) with a goal of creating art that addresses climate change or individual and/or community carbon footprint. Through this project, the goal is to educate and raise public awareness of energy usage in a fun, creative and uplifting manner.
“Solar Filling Station”, created by Diana Walker-Smith and Olga Garzon is influenced by Pacific Gas & Electric’s “Go Solar” effort and the California Solar Initiative. “Based on the need to wean ourselves from fossil fuels, the artwork is a post modernist appropriation of the “filling station,” – a term used in the early twentieth century to describe a place where one “filled” their automobile with petroleum. Utilizing the allegorical emblem of the “filling station”, the solar “filling station” will collect energy through the use of flexible solar panels and dispense electricity so the public may re-charge their cell phones or laptops while relaxing next to this unique piece of art”.
The Solar Filling Station is being placed at 1414 East Covell Blvd. in the Oak Tree Plaza.
