The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, UC Davis announces a program change to the Ninety Miles jazz trio performing January 9–12, 2013. Nicholas Payton was born into a musical family in New Orleans, receiving his first trumpet at age four. He has toured with several musicians including Clark Terry, Marcus Roberts, Ray Brown, Elvin Jones and Roy Haynes. Payton is credited on more than 120 recordings as a composer, arranger, special guest or sideman. As a leader, Payton has recorded eight albums under his own name including Doc Cheatham and Nicholas Payton—a 1997 Grammy Award-winning collaboration with the legendary trumpeter. He also released Dear Louis, Nick @ Night, Gumbo Nouveau, Sonic Trance, Payton's Place and Into The Blue.
Part of the Capital Public Radio Studio Jazz series, Ninety Miles will perform for four nights at 8 p.m. in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre. The trio is a unique collaboration between three critically acclaimed jazz musicians: vibist Stefon Harris, saxophonist David Sánchez and trumpeter Nicholas Payton. Drawing on a collection of songs recorded over the span of a week in Havana, Cuba, this all-star trio creates music that foregoes political and musical borders.
