In 1903, Mary Austin's book "The Land of Little Rain," was in print and selling very well. Austin was born in 1868, and deserves to be read because she wrote well and movingly. She records what she saw and keeps a record of the time and people. Ruth reads "The Pocket Hunter" today. This is a chapter describing the gold seeker still on the hunt.
