Music programs are only online for two weeks after they are broadcast.

That's Dan Carson, new Council Member (8/23/18)

A new member of the Davis City Council, Dan Carson has lots to talk about. First Lois asked him how he came to be a Council Member. (His history is interestering.) Then she wanted to know what he saw as the two biggest problems affecting our City in the future. (Long-term finances and University-City arrangements.) What is one thing we could improve immediately to help us make all the other decisions? (Communication! Between segments in town when projects are suggested; between residents and City officials; and between larger entities.)

That's AMOWRP in 2018 ...

The 2018 Apartment Move-Out Waste Reduction Program (AMOWRP) is again being lead by Jennifer Gilbert, Conservation Coordinator for the City of Davis.

This program is an attempt to help renters find homes for useable items rather than putting them in the dump.  Volunteers staff "donation stations" at some of the large apartment complexes and help keep things tidy and easy to use.  VOLUNTEERS WANTED every year.  Contact Jennfer in July to sign up, get trained, and arrange for your volunteer hours.  She is reachable at: JGilbert@CityOfDavis.org

HIV/SHIV: early work at UCD with Dr Murray Gardner (7/26/2018)

AIDS Virus Diagnostic Laboratory -- the history of a successful scientific journey into retrovirus detection and treatment with Dr Murray Gardner.  Another fascinating story from a retired professor and doctor from UCD.  Although he "retired" in 2000 at age 70, Murray continues to go in to the office every day and help out. Worth a listen!

(below is a blurb from the UCD's California National Primate Research Center)

Thirty years ago, the CNPRC was at the forefront of discovering the role of retroviruses as the causative agent for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Dr. Murray Gardner, emeritus Professor of Pathology in the UC Davis School of Medicine, often refers to the CNPRC as the “home” of simian AIDS, as early isolates of retroviruses related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were identified in colony animals and studied by researchers here.

Greywater with Kent Thompson of Cool Davis

Kent Thompson tells us about Water Wise Davis -- a working group of Cool Davis -- and explains all about saving water by re-using shower water to water the yard. This "greywater" idea has evolved from the 70s (when I had friends who created outdoors showers) to today's integrated greywater systems being built right into new homes. Kent Thomson has been working on improving greywater techniques and getting legislation passed to ensure folks can use them to save almost 30% of their water use.

Tree-Tagging Davis! CCUH -- Dave Fujino (7/5/18)

The Tree-Tagging project in Davis and on campus was a joint venture with many partners.  Initiated by the UCD Arboretum, it was the product of aeverl UCD students' interest in sharing with the community the benefits of trees to our life and our world.  Ther created and placed dozens of "tree tag" around campus and downtown.  Look for these large signs hanging on some trees. Because it is summer break, the UCD students were not available to talk with. So I asked some of the partners is the project to come and tell us about their organizations.  (Today is CCUH, next week is Tree Davis.)

That's Life: Philosophy and Folksongs (6/28/18)

Lois talks about some "Unifying Principles" that have helped her understand herself better over the years.  Taken from Dr Charles R Hobb's 1970s book "The Doctrine of Self-Unification", Lois shares a how-to list exercise that can help one clarify what they want and how to get it.

After her brief monologue, we seque into music by The Carpenters; Peter, Paul, and Mary; and Jeff Peterson with Riley Lee.
