OUR PROGRAMS

Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Live Friday 11am-1pm
Replays Sunday 9-11am

Listening Lyrics

Listening Lyrics, Kurt.org, community radio

Welcome to an hour of Listening Lyrics, right here on KDRT 95.7 FM in Davis, California.

No musical passports required. Folk can sit next to funk, jazz can dance with rock, and a singer-songwriter might end up sharing a park bench with a reggae band. Listening Lyrics is your invitation to escape the noise of the day and enter a world of elaborate sounds, unexpected discoveries, and songs that have something to say.

This is the kind of journey only commercial-free community radio can provide.

So close your eyes. Open your ears. Relax your mind. Join me, Pieter Pastoor, as we send color to your ears and wander through the vast landscape of music and lyrics—the grand meeting place of rhythm, imagination, and the remarkable human ability to create art. Whether it's a whisper, a roar, a groove, or a melody you've never heard before, it all belongs here.

Remember: Real Music. Real Community. Real Good Music.

Live Friday 4-5pm
Replays Sunday 11am-12pm

Listening Lyrics, May 29, 2026: With Karl Rasmussen, joyfulness is a Big Sticky Mess

Fri, 05/29/2026 - 4:00pm | Pieter Pastoor

IMG_5594.jpeg

When it comes to guests, Karl Rasmussen is definitely on the “A” list. He’s articulate, thoughtful, full of energy, and brings the kind of warmth and enthusiasm that leaves an impression on everyone he meets.

Karl is a true multi-instrumentalist—equally at home on guitar, keyboards, trombone, percussion, and vocals. He’s a driving force in Davis/Sacramento’s own Big Sticky Mess, a band with deep local roots and a sound often described as a joyful blend of early-’70s funk, soul, and rock—full of groove, humor, and heart.

Beyond Big Sticky Mess, Karl has lent his talents to a wide range of Northern California bands and projects, including Boca do Rio, ideateam, and several jazz and funk collaborations. No matter the setting or style, one thing always comes through: Karl loves making music and loves sharing it with others.

Sonny & Miles & more on The Audio Ecotone – May 29, 2026

Fri, 05/29/2026 - 10:03am | Eddy Owt

This week we lost one of the last giants from the "classic" age of jazz. Sonny Rollins passed at the age of 95 on May 25, one day prior to Miles Davis' 100th birthday. Rollins not only helped define the sound of jazz tenor saxophone on such classic albums as Saxophone Colossus, Freedom Suite, and The Bridge, but he also continued to evolve and perform up into his eighties. On this week's show, we highlight some of his classic tracks, pay tribute to Miles' 100th, and spotlight some new music and upcoming shows this weekend. Listen live at 3 p.m. PT on 95.7FM locally or kdrt.org worldwide.

Replays Sunday at 4 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m.

Dr. Gabi Kirk explains the U.S. soldiers at the Arboretum, on Hello Davis!, May 27, 2026

Wed, 05/27/2026 - 5:30pm | Pieter Pastoor

hello-davis.png

Today on Hello Davis!, Dr. Gabi Kirk talks with David Abramson about our beloved Arboretum in Davis and its militarism in the past.

The Militarized Campus Arboretum research and teaching project explores the histories of everyday militarism hidden in plain sight at the University of California, Davis. From her website: "Our project aims to teach UC Davis campus affiliates, Davis community members, and visitors about the multiple militarized legacies of UC Davis and the land grant university as a whole. The research project was started to explore the use of UC Davis campus facilities as a training school for the Western Signal Corps School during World War II (1943-1944), but has expanded to analyze how U.S. imperialism overseas is intimately linked to domestic policing and settler colonialism."
