Davisville, Jan. 10, 2022: Catching up with Jonathan Edwards — the one from Davis

Mon, 01/10/2022 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Jonathan Edwards.jpg

Today we talk with Jonathan Edwards, a reporter for the Davis Enterprise a dozen years ago who joined the Washington Post last July after working for news outlets in Nebraska and Virginia. We talk about differences in reporting, objectivity, establishing credibility when audiences are polarized, and what he learned in Davis all those years ago.

He also has a good story about the experience of sharing his name with other people, including the North Carolina senator who ran for vice president in 2004, the current governor of Louisiana, the musician who created the hit song “Sunshine” in 1972, and the influential 18th century American revivalist preacher who wrote Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. The title inspired an English teacher to have a little fun when handing classwork back to Jonathan at Davis High School.

'Murder Most Foul,' by Bob Dylan -- an analysis, on Listening Lyrics, Jan. 7, 2022

Fri, 01/07/2022 - 4:00pm | Pieter Pastoor

On today's progam, Listening Lyrics plays "Murder Most Foul" and spends a little time analyzing the song. This is done by means of playing some of the music Dylan mentions in the song.

From Wikipedia: "Murder Most Foul" by Bob Dylan is the 10th and final track on his 39th studio album, Rough and Rowdy Ways (2020). It was released as the album's lead single on March 27, 2020, through Columbia Records. The song addresses the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy in the context of the greater American political and cultural history.

The song, Dylan's first original music released since 2012, generated an enormous amount of commentary. At 16 minutes, 56 seconds, it is the longest song he has released, eclipsing 1997's "Highlands" by 25 seconds.

The Folk Brothers for Jan. 5, 2022: Source To Sea

Wed, 01/05/2022 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

OIP.LjM2f1qibdaPqKg8HECq2QHaHa.jpeg

Julie Fowlis' new digital EP "Source To Sea" comprises three songs she wrote for a new podcast of the same name. The cohosts -- Lee Cragie and Jenny Graham -- travelled the length of the rivers Dee, Tay, and Clyde by foot, mountain bike, and pack raft, recording their interactions with the natural world they encountered on their journies. For her tracks, Fowlis used prose from Nan Shepherd's The Living Mountain, a memoir of time spent in the wilds of the Scottish highlands.

On today's show, we played "Silver In Blue," Fowlis' ode to the River Clyde, plus new tracks from TRU, Talisk, Matt Stevens, Robert Plant, and Allison Krauss. And much more!

Davisville, Dec. 27, 2021: ‘Carol’ is more than an ornament, plus prospects for more theater in Davis

Mon, 12/27/2021 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Christmas Carol horizontal.JPG

Few things created in 1843 are still relevant, but A Christmas Carol still is. One of the lasting versions of Charles Dickens’ classic story is the adaptation that today’s guest, Richard Hellesen, wrote for the Sacramento Theatre Co. in 1987. Its latest run wrapped up this month. Today we talk with Richard about what he calls the “pure luck” that landed him the offer to write the play, why Carol is timely, and why & how Davis could become more of a regional center for live theater. UC Davis, where Richard studied, is a catalyst.
