OUR PROGRAMS

That's Life

Lois Richter’s format for That’s Life is mostly interviews. Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

To suggest a topic for discussion or a person to interview, text Lois or leave a message in the comments here.

Live Tuesday 12-1pm

Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

Live Tuesday 6-8pm
Replays Saturday 5-7pm

IMPLOSION

IMPLOSION graphic

IMPLOSION is hosted by Nick Saloman, front person of The Bevis Frond. Born and raised in London, England, Nick started buying records as a small child in the late 1950s and began going to gigs and playing in bands as a teen in the late 60s. IMPLOSION is simply an hour of Nick playing the music that he loves (psychedelia, rock, folk, beat, jazz, soul, punk, and more), with a bit of chat thrown in for good measure. Nick says: "If I like it, then there have got to be a few other people who will too.

Live Wednesday 4-5pm
Replays Sunday 7-8pm

Henry Kapono on Na Mele O Hawai'i

Thu, 01/12/2023 - 3:10pm | Beth Post

Henry Kapono

Today, we were so honored to interview the one and only Henry Kapono. What a treasure he has been and continues to be to not only Hawaiian music but Hawaiian culture and the world.  We also pay tribute to two folks we lost in the last 10 days: Danny Kaleikini, the Ambassador of Aloha, and Milan Bertosa, an engineer of the highest grade and someone who contributed to an incredible catalog of Hawaiian recordings.

The Folk Brothers for Jan. 11, 2023: Remembering Ian Tyson and Blaze Foley

Wed, 01/11/2023 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

Unknown.jpeg

Ian Tyson passed away at his cattle ranch on Dec. 29. Long after folk stardom with Syliva Fricker in the 1960s, Tyson had a long career as a singer-songwriter who almost single-handedly revived Western (aka "cowboy") music. Blaze Foley (pictured) died by gunshot in 1989. But Brother Bill watched Ethan Hawkes' biofilm Blaze over the holiday, and was inspired to present music from that soundtrack. And more.

Davisville, Jan. 9, 2023: An exit interview with Dan Carson

Mon, 01/09/2023 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Dan Carson at KDRT Dec 31 2022.JPG

In the nearly 106 years that Davis has been a city, the City Council has had fewer than 100 members total. Not a big number for a city that now numbers 67,000 people.

Today we talk with Dan Carson, who became the newest former member of the council after losing his seat to Bapu Vaitla last November. We talk a little about Measure H and his lawsuit challenging the ballot statement opposing the measure, a criticized tactic that Carson later regretted. We spend more time on what he learned about the city from being on the council, how he thinks Davis is doing, and what he does and does not miss now that he no longer has the job.
