In the Key of Folk

In the Key of Folk with Karen Leyse offers music that will keep you humming or dancing along — perhaps both! The focus is on traditional and current folk music, Americana, and bluegrass, with Celtic, Nordic, and Spanish infusions — wherever Karen's travels and interests take her. In addition, the music of contra dance, an American Folk tradition that came with English and other settlers, will often be threaded through the hour. Don’t know it? Check it out.

DJ Rodriquez invites you to tune in to Silver Nine Volt Heart from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 for a live interview with Bay Area musician Maurice Tani. This special broadcast highlights the sounds from Maurice's new album, All In, on the Little Village Foundation record label.

After a long career playing with legendary Bay Area bands such as The Flamin' Groovies, Big Bang Beat and the Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra, Maurice has embarked upon a new trail of solo creativity he calls "Americana, without limits." We speak with him about his new adventures and his plans for the upcoming live performance at the Thursday Live! concert at the Odd Fellows Hall in Davis on Feb. 2.

Eric Andersen -- who has had a long, distinuished career as a singer-songwriter -- was the subject of a 2021 PBS documentary The Songpoet, and now the recepient of a just-released, 3-CD tribute album featuring contributions from Bob Dylan (who covers "Thirsty Boots") and 40 other artists. This morning we played contributions from Mary Chapin Carpenter, Amy Helm, Richard Shindell and others.

The student government at UC Davis employs more than 1,000 people, speaks for one of the most important constituencies in Davis, and runs popular local services and events like Unitrans and Picnic Day.

But less than 6 percent of students voted in the Associated Students of UC Davis fall 2022 election, so what are people overlooking?

Today we talk with ASUCD President Radhika Gawde (pictured)  about engagement, students’ biggest concern (the rising cost of living), and their relief services for students, plus her appreciation that UC Davis lets students dabble in classes across disciplines, and wish for more late-night food options in town.
