Seth Cooper visits Listening Lyrics on 6/17/16 at 4 PM

Local talent continues to impress and this week's guest is no exception. Born and raised in Woodland, CA, Seth Cooper, the lead singer and instrumentalist for indie band Alamo Merchant, swoons in high falsetto and rumbling baritone to script tragedies ripped right from the silver screen.  Whether it be the idolization of the disco era or a cold, meditative drive through the blizzards of West Texas, Cooper's stories convey a sense of farm boy wit and wonder with the world at large.

Alex Elvis Calatayud brings Brazilian music to Listening lyrics Friday 6/3/16

Alex Elvis Calatayud is a percussionist extraordinaire and we have hime for the hour. His smile and love of music and live is very contagious. Elvis is in the group Boca Do Rio . He has just returned from Brazil and will be introducing to us some of the new music he found. Brazil has an ancient history, one that is complex and intricate. This has created a deep sense of culture and heritage as an array of traditions, customs, colors  languages and religious denominations have settled in this South American nation. Music, song and dance remain an integral part of the identity of a society. Even the most primitive of tribes tend to establish their own sort of musical culture.

As different people set up home throughout Brazil, each brought with them and developed their own unique style of song and music. With time, these different styles have evolved somewhat. Some have remained distinct and unique, while others have influenced modern music and performance to a certain degree. This has created a characteristic sound for Brazil.

The Working Mans Poet, Merle Haggard review on Listening Lyrics, 4/15/16 at 4:00PM

This week, Listening Lyrics takes a look back at the musical contributions of Merle Haggard, one of country music's most gifted and prolific songwriters. During the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Haggard had an amazing streak of 26 number-one country singles. Haggard's early hits – including "The Fugitive," "Mama Tried," and "Okie From Muskogee" – comprise what Rolling Stone executive editor Jason Fine, in a 2009 profile of Haggard, called "the backbone of one of the greatest repertoires in all of American music, plain-spoken songs populated by the kinds of working people Haggard grew up with: farmers, hobos, convicts, widows, musicians and drunks." Quoting Bob Dylan, "Merle Haggard has always been as deep as it gets...totally himself. Herculean. He definitely transcends the country genre."

Dirk Hamilton visits The Grapevine on WED 4/13/16 at 6:00PM

Singer-songwriter Dirk Hamilton visits The Grapevine on KDRT Wednesday evening, April 13th, at 6 p.m. PT. Hamilton was born in Indiana and raised in Northern California. He picked up a guitar as a youth and was writing songs and playing live performances by the time he was in high school. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 70s and recorded four critically acclaimed albums: two while at ABC Records, and two while at Elektra/Asylum Records. A poet and musician known for his uniquely intelligent lyrics and passionate performance style, Hamilton creates music that can't be pigeon-holed into one genre or another, so indie rock, alt-rock, roots music, americana and folk-rock are often used. For his lyrics and performance style he is most often compared to Dylan, Van Morrison, and John Hiatt. Visit Dirk at www.dirkhamilton.com
