Dig Dave Alvin on The Grapevine & Electric Compost Heap!

Over the course of the following week, K-Dirt listeners can get a big ol' helping of Dave Alvin. One of America's finest songwriters and guitarists, Dave has blazed an independent & very prolific trail from Downey, CA to 2011 and your mind, soul & ears.

Celebrating his latest release, "11/11", we'll be laying down some of the gut buckety blues material from the album on The Grapevine which can be heard live on Thursday from 7 to 8 pm, with repeats over the course of the next week. Then, while I am sitting in for Doug Deep on The Electric Compost Heap on Wednesday, November 23rd from 7 to 9 pm, we will dig a little more into Dave's "songwriter" side of things with more excellent sounds from "11/11" and his past work...especially his masterpiece, "King of California". Last, but not least, you can count on hearing some choice cuts from the legendary band he started with his brother Phil, The Blasters, on both broadcasts.

So check the K-Dirt programming schedule for The Grapevine and Electric Compost Heap broadcast times and join us for a good listen to the music of California's own Dave Alvin.

Here's a taste of what is in store:

Accidents
by Marcia Popp
i broke a vase at my great-grandfather's house when i was five here come sit on my lap
he said don't feel bad about that vase i didn't like it anyway you helped me get rid of it
I knew better but let him comfort me while i felt secretly bad inside did you know that my
own mother said i was her worst boy no i said that can't be true oh yes he said and she was
right i made accidents happen all the time i didn't really mean to do bad things they just
came upon me when i wasn't paying attention when i was five my brother and i chased the
goose in the barnyard until it fell over dead we propped her up in the fence so she would
appear to be interested in the grass on the other side
what happened my father noticed

Lara Downes in Concert at Mondavi, Nov. 12, 13

Lara Downes will be presenting her recent project for solo piano, 13 Ways of Looking At the Goldberg this weekend at the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center on the U.C. Davis campus. She will play 13 recent compositions by various composers that are twenty first century variations on the iconic Goldberg aria, which Bach composed for use by his student Goldberg to help a wealthy patron get to sleep. The aria is a beautiful, lyrical theme on which Bach composed 30 variations. For those interested in finding out more as a preview for her concert (or simply for their own edification), listen to Dr. Paul's Classics show of Oct. 25. During the second half of this show, Paul and Lara Downes converse about this project, and about other upcoming events. Some tracks are played from her album. In the two subsequent shows, also during the second half, more tracks are sampled. Please go to mondaviarts.org for more information and/or for tickets. It should be a fabulous show.
