Lara Downes in Concert at Mondavi, Nov. 12, 13

Lara Downes will be presenting her recent project for solo piano, 13 Ways of Looking At the Goldberg this weekend at the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center on the U.C. Davis campus. She will play 13 recent compositions by various composers that are twenty first century variations on the iconic Goldberg aria, which Bach composed for use by his student Goldberg to help a wealthy patron get to sleep. The aria is a beautiful, lyrical theme on which Bach composed 30 variations. For those interested in finding out more as a preview for her concert (or simply for their own edification), listen to Dr. Paul's Classics show of Oct. 25. During the second half of this show, Paul and Lara Downes converse about this project, and about other upcoming events. Some tracks are played from her album. In the two subsequent shows, also during the second half, more tracks are sampled. Please go to mondaviarts.org for more information and/or for tickets. It should be a fabulous show.

Lara Downes is coming!

Yes, that's right, Lara Downes, artist in residence at the Mondavi Center and pianist extraordinaire will be interviewed on my show this week (Oct. 25) on Dr. Paul's Classics at 2:00 p.m. Tune in to find out more about this talented woman. Dr. Paul goes Hawaiian!

Well, not exactly. It's just that the first hour of my show has been picked up by KAHU-fm, a small community radio station on the Big Island of Hawaii. I still play all the same lovely, stirring classical music that you are accustomed to. Just go to kahufm.com to hear my live stream from Pahala, Hawaii on Sunday, 8:00 p.m., Hawaii time. For you night owls, that is 11:00 p.m. PDT. KAHU has a lot more very cool programming. Check it out, it's my prescription for the week.

From the libretto of "Habanera", from Georges Bizet's "Carmen"

Love is a rebellious bird,
that no one can tame.
And you call him quite in vain
if it suits him not to come.

Nothing helps, neither threat nor prayer;
one man talks well,
but the other man is the one that I prefer.
He's silent, but I like his looks.

Love! Love! Love! Love!

Love is a gypsy's child,
it has never, ever known a law.
Love me not, then I love you;
If I love you, you best beware.

The bird you thought that you had caught,
beat it's wings and flew away.
Love stays away, you wait and wait;
when least expected, there it is.

All around you, swift so swift,

Lyrics to Por Ti Volare

When I Live Alone
I dream of a horizon
with no words.
In the shadow and amongst lights
for my sight it's all black
if you are not with me...here

You
in your world
separated from mine by an abyss
Hear
call me
I'll fly
to your distant world

for you I'll fly
wait for me I'll arrive
my trip's end is you
for living it we two.
For you I'll fly
by skies and seas
up to your love.
Openiong the eyes at last
with you I'll live

When you are far
I dream of a horizon
with no words.
And I know that you are always there, there
a moon made for me
always illuminated for me
