Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

The Folk Brothers for April 5, 2023: New and old sounds from Ireland

Wed, 04/05/2023 - 11:10am | Peter Schiffman

OIP.cc59Js71ZriIATfdiROgaQHaHa.jpeg

Amelia Baker -- a.k.a. Cinder Well -- is a native Californian who played in folk/punk bands around Santa Cruz. She was introduced to Irish traditional music through meeting members of the Dublin-based experimental folk band Lankum at a festival in Amsterdam. Subsequently Baker moved to County Clare to enroll in a master's program in Irish traditional music performance at Limerick University. This spring, both Well and Lankum have released new albums which are helping define the current sound of Irish folk music.

In 1981, Irish supergroup Planxty -- then at the point of disbanding -- were commissioned to create a music and dance piece for the Eurovision contest held that year in Dublin. Apparently that project, entitled "Timedance," was an inspiration for Michael Flatley to create "Riverdance" in 1994.

Davisville, April 3, 2023: Talking about restaurants, trends and Davis with Bee food writer Benjy Egel

Mon, 04/03/2023 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Benjy Egel, from Sacbee's Food Craft with Benjy Egel.png

Benjy Egel says he’s been interested in food ever since he was a kid in Davis. “I grew up doing cooking camps through the city of Davis programs, at like Cesar Chavez Elementary,” he said. After cooking during his college years and working as a journalist after graduating, “I just sort of fell into [food writing] professionally by accident.”

Today he is the Sacramento Bee’s food and beverage writer, which includes writing reviews as well as reporting food trends and news in the region. He’s had the job about 5 years so far. Today our subjects include food and restaurants in Greater Sacramento, trends, staffing, the scene in Davis, and how he approaches his job.

Ewan MacColl (1915-1989) -- one of the leading lights of the British folk revival of the '50s -- was among many things a singer, a song collector, an actor, a radio presenter, and a prodigious songwriter. This morning we celebrate the latter with contributions from Pete Morton, Seth Lakeman, Christy Moore, Johnny Cash, as well as the great man himself.
