OUR PROGRAMS

Classical Excursions

Greg LaTraille

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Live Friday 11am-1pm
Replays Sunday 9-11am
DJ(s):

Roots, Shoots and Leaves

Roots, Shoots and Leaves' DJ Tree has a theory of music that involves a tree. Suffice it to say that it involves a trinity — an exploration of themes and connections among recording artists — and otherwise very few boundaries. Listen for music old and new, known and unknown. And if you listen long enough, you may experience some musical enlightenment.

Live Tuesday 6-8pm
Replays Saturday 5-7pm
DJ(s):
Tree Kilpatrick

Davisville, April 1, 2024: A year later, less panic about chatbots

Mon, 04/01/2024 - 5:30pm | Bill Buchanan

Sometimes chatbots hallucinate.png

In winter 2023 we talked with Andy Jones and Margaret Merrill of UC Davis about ChatGPT, a new artificial-intelligence app that was setting off alarms for its advanced ability to "write" reports and articles. On today’s Davisville they report that among the faculty they work with, the sense of panic present then has now eased “quite a bit.” People know more about the limits of chatbots, and are asking more about how and where to use the tools in teaching, instead of just fearing them as a plagiarism machine.

We talk about handling chatbot hallucinations, resisting the biases that chatbots suck into their text databases, and hear a few examples of how UC Davis instructors are using the tools in their classrooms.

Jacob Johnson & Henry Humphrey of Cowboys After Dark, on Listening Lyrics, March 22, 2024

Fri, 03/22/2024 - 5:10pm | Pieter Pastoor

cowboys A D.jpeg

Jacob Johnson and Henry Humphrey of Cowboys After Dark share their thoughts on how music is a language that is universally understood. These two gifted musicians can also articulate what they mean using the common language we know as English.

Jacob and Henry treated us by playing a couple of songs live on the air. Jacob allowed Listening Lyrics to debut "Fungus Funk," an original song from an upcoming rap/funk album aimed at communicating science (especially ecology) to middle- and high-school students and the general public.
