ABOUT US

KDRT 95.7 FM is grassroots radio from Davis, CA, airing an eclectic mix of music and public-affairs programming. A project of nonprofit Davis Media Access, KDRT streams worldwide via KDRT.org.

Classical radio programs often focus on well-known light classics and ignore challenging and imaginative masterworks, especially from the rich repertoire of 20th century music, which is very diverse. This results in listeners who are unaware of many wonderful works. Excursions will present short and longer works by famous as well as less known composers, with insightful commentary by a composer with years of experience in radio, classical marketing, and music education.

Live on the first, third and occasional fifth Friday of the month.

Each week, one of the follow local community organizations hosts the program in rotation, interviewing guests connected to their work — sharing stories, highlighting their programs, and offering a closer look at how they serve Davis.

The Wild Fox Party

Tune in for a wide variety of roots music — including doo-wop, gospel, jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll, Latin, African, and hillbilly/country bluegrass — from the early 1920s to contemporary times. The Wild Fox Party focuses on vocal groups , small-group ensembles, and outstanding vocalists and instrumentalists who never or hardly ever get heard. The music provides a forum for learning about history and diverse cultures, and it does so through the exposure of music as art, highlighting points in time that will last forever via the medium of audio recordings.

The 13th annual Davis Music Fest kicks off June 20—and trust us, it's not just lucky number 13 for the organizers! This week on Listening Lyrics, we'll serve up a musical sampler platter featuring songs from the many artists rolling into town for the weekend. Think of it as a sneak preview with less walking and no cover charge.

With dozens of artists, venues, and genres on the menu, your ears are in for a feast.

Joining us is Kyle Monhollen—the man in the middle of this musical mayhem—who’ll dish on what it takes to pull off an event of this scale (spoiler: coffee and spreadsheets).

Tune in Friday at 4 p.m. and get a feel for the festival vibe. You might even walk away with a game plan for which venues to hit—and maybe a few new favorite bands to name-drop.

Meet Harald Tollerup — Davis High School senior, jazz saxophonist, journalist, and a young man who treats the future like it's his personal playground (and he's already winning).

Harald dropped by the studio this week with a playlist he hand-picked himself. Now, I believe a playlist says a lot about a person — and Harald’s? It spoke volumes. It was creative, honest, and refreshingly original … just like the guy who made it.

Not only does Harald share the soundtrack of his world, he also brings out the sax and plays live — because why just talk about jazz when you can be jazz?
