Outlandos d'Amour, by The Police (Album of the Week: October 6 at 5pm PT)

The Police put out all five of their studio albums between 1978 and 1983, and there's not a stinker among them. They got in, delivered something near perfect for a half-decade, and then let the project be. I think that's beautiful. They're batting 1000, which is rare.

For Album of the Week, I'm playing their debut record, Outlandos d'Amour, which is tied for my favorite with the two records that follow it. Their fourth and fifth records are a tiny step down for me, but only becasue I grew up less inclined toward 80s synths and whatnot, although that's changed some in recent years. All five records are great, and their very natural evolution is part of that greatness.

Here's a bit about Outlandos d'Amour. I'll share some of my own thoughts between tracks during the show.

The LP initially performed poorly due to low exposure and an unfavourable reaction from the BBC to its first two singles, "Can't Stand Losing You" and "Roxanne" (about suicide and prostitution, respectively). As Sting describes:

Tune in to Divine Intervention for a random and rare mix of music -- much new, much rock and pop, mostly stellar... And then, of course, there'll be a blessedly short interlude for our "Vinyl Vespers" feature. This week's pick is pictured here. Let's hope Dr. Evans can give us some sound advice on "the most important institution in the home." Tune in live, 7-9p Pacific. Want replays/playlists? Visit the program page.

The Lique Live on KDRT!

TheLique.jpg

The Lique photo

Hip-hop/jazz/funk band The Lique (pronounced "leek") will be stopping by KDRT on Friday, Sept 30th, at 1:00 pm to talk with host Dug Deep about the recent release of their debut album, Democracy Manifest. They'll also tell us about some local shows they have lined up, including a performance Friday night at Harlow's in Sacramento.

The Lique hails from Las Vegas, but vocalist/poet Rasar Amani is a native of Sacramento who released 10 albums of hip-hop fused with social commentary and politics while living hereabouts. The Lique gives Rasar's image-filled lyrics a whole new dynamic, and the result is poignant, raucous, and always danceable. Tune in and hear for yourself.

Bumptet visits Listening Lyrics on KDRT Friday 10/30/16 at 4:00PM

Bumptet.jpg

Bumptet to appear on KDRT 95.7 Davis, CA

Groove masters The Bumptet  bring reckless sophistication to each performance with an improvisational, genre-bending approach to music. Their compositions range in style and complexity, moving from deep funk grooves to epic rock crescendos to intricate, fusion-esque lines and back again–with improvisation, forward motion, and an in-the-moment attitude as the only constants.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of John Scofield, MMW, Garaj Mahal, the Headhunters, and Phish, the Northern California quintet takes listeners on a spirited journey that must be seen live in order to fully appreciate the level of musicianship and soul they bring to every show.  But don’t expect to hear carbon copy renditions of their tunes on stage.  The Bumptet pride themselves on delivering high energy, improvised sets of funk music with skillfully adept execution (including the occasional foray into the jam band outer stratosphere!).

Album of the Week for 09/29/2016 : "Heads Up" by Warpaint

Heads Up

I have only heard the first single released a couple of weeks ago for this album: "New Song." I do not like this song (yet), mainly because it's more disco than I want from what I've come to love about Warpaint. They planted an earworm in me about five years ago with "Undertow," which I was certain was a Nirvana cover (it's not, but the band claims it is an homage to "Polly"), and I like various of their songs. So, join me and the gang for a first listen of Heads Up on this week's Album of the Week. We bought the vinyl and it's a two-disc set; however, both discs feature the same music and tracks. The difference? One pink vinyl and one black. Which will we play in studio? You'll need to tune in to find out.

As for our Vinyl Vespers feature, this one's for the ladies! Yes, we have Debbie Drake's advice on keeping the ol' hubby happy--timeless tips from the past century! This is not to be missed, especially if you're having trouble keeping your romeo from roaming! Tune in live, 7-9p Pacific. Want replay? Visit the program page.
