70. 50 Years of Hip Hop

Fifty years ago in an apartment in the South Bronx a teen DJ threw a back-to-school birthday party where he dropped electrifying breakbeats and hip hop was born. Since then, this grassroots musical revolution rapidly turned into a global social and cultural phenomenon. Hip hop scholar, Halifu Osumare, tells us about the roots and evolution of hip hop and its influence as a powerful genre that expresses the voice of youth. Then visit the South Bronx — home of the New York Yankees, an authentic Little Italy, the largest park in New York City, and the birthplace of hip hop.

"50 Years of Hip Hop" really educates people about hip-hop's history and culture. Rohan really did his research, and it paid off. This is an excellent tribute to Hip-Hop's 50th Anniversary, and I am glad to be a part of it through my interview about my own career and my hip-hop research and scholarship.
