Jazz After Dark Aug 13th, 2013

1970s jazz tonight!  Jazz was going in a lot of different directions in the 1970’s. Fusion with rock and classical, funk, vocalists doing pop and R&B, international flavors.Tonight we have two legendary vocalists, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, in concert performances in the later parts of their careers. Classical-trained flutist Hubert Laws. Some amazing time signatures from Don Ellis, some funky brass from the Crusaders. Al Jarreau’s career was just taking off, and later he shifted to a soft R&B sound. Jobim still at the top of his game, Herb Alpert teaming with Hugh Masekela. Rahsaan Roland Kirk, one of the creative geniuses of the decade. And George Benson and Chuck Mangione foreshadowing the beginnings of smooth jazz.
