Jazz After Dark Apr 23rd, 2013

Tonight’s featured artist is Tommy Flanagan. Flanagan had recordings over forty years as band leader and played as a sideman to some of the jazz greats of the 20th century: Kenny Burrell, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Milt Jackson, Art Pepper, and more.

He was Ella Fitzgerald’s longtime accompanist, and we’ll hear some samples from their work together, along with his performances with John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan, Illinois Jacquet, as well as some solo performances.

He played across many genres of jazz and is hard to categorize. Part of the Detroit jazz scene, hard bop, soul jazz, you name it. To me he was always just unassuming and mellow with a cool sound.
