I am an avid cyclist (pedicabbing, road biking, mountain biking, touring, I just love pushing pedals), outdoor enthusiast, reader, and PhD Candidate in Latin American History at UC-Davis. Born and raised in Berkeley, my reggae conversion experience occurred while watching Vaughn Benjamin (then of Midnite, now Akae Beka) and Culture at the Monterey Bay Reggae Festival in 2006. Over the years, I have come to love the Northern California reggae-scape, from Reggae on the River in Humboldt and Sierra Nevada in Mendocino, to shows at the Ace of Spades and Harlows in Sacramento and Ashkenaz in Berkeley. Recently, my interest in the history of reggae has led me to read two great biographies that I highly recommend- Colin Grant's Negro With a Hat: The Rise and Fall of Marcus Garvey and Asfa-Wossen Asserate's King of Kings: The Triumph and Tragedy of Emperor Halie Selassie I of Ethiopia. Also, Chanting Down Babylon: The Rastafari Reader edited by William David Spencer has a ton of great stuff.
