That's Life

Lois Richter’s format for That’s Life is mostly interviews. Recurring topics include Davis activities and groups; work and life choices; philosophy and theory; plus birding, cooking, art, and other passions. Lois occasionally breaks into music — from ballads to the slack key sounds of Hawaii to golden oldies rock 'n' roll — but mostly there is just talk.

To suggest a topic for discussion or a person to interview, text Lois or leave a message in the comments here.

Lois seldom (but occasionally) updates her other website. Check it out at https://BirdingWithLois.global

Greywater with Kent Thompson of Cool Davis

Kent Thompson tells us about Water Wise Davis -- a working group of Cool Davis -- and explains all about saving water by re-using shower water to water the yard. This "greywater" idea has evolved from the 70s (when I had friends who created outdoors showers) to today's integrated greywater systems being built right into new homes. Kent Thomson has been working on improving greywater techniques and getting legislation passed to ensure folks can use them to save almost 30% of their water use.

Tree-Tagging Davis! CCUH -- Dave Fujino (7/5/18)

The Tree-Tagging project in Davis and on campus was a joint venture with many partners.  Initiated by the UCD Arboretum, it was the product of aeverl UCD students' interest in sharing with the community the benefits of trees to our life and our world.  Ther created and placed dozens of "tree tag" around campus and downtown.  Look for these large signs hanging on some trees. Because it is summer break, the UCD students were not available to talk with. So I asked some of the partners is the project to come and tell us about their organizations.  (Today is CCUH, next week is Tree Davis.)

That's Life: Philosophy and Folksongs (6/28/18)

Lois talks about some "Unifying Principles" that have helped her understand herself better over the years.  Taken from Dr Charles R Hobb's 1970s book "The Doctrine of Self-Unification", Lois shares a how-to list exercise that can help one clarify what they want and how to get it.

After her brief monologue, we seque into music by The Carpenters; Peter, Paul, and Mary; and Jeff Peterson with Riley Lee.

Davis Media Access and Autumn Labbe-Renault (5/24/18)

Once again Lois welcomes Autumn Labbe-Renault for an update on Davis Media Access as we celebrate DMA's 30th anniversary.

As it says on the DMA website: "As a media and technology center, a community gathering place, and a content distributor, Davis Media Access works with people from all walks of life to address issues and topics often ignored by mainstream media. Our partners are libraries, schools, non-profits, local government, activists, musicians, and people like you. We help you tell your stories and ensure diverse voices are heard."

Listen now to hear some stories of the early DCTV days, and find out plans for DMA's future.

Short Stories from 'Cats In Space' (5/17/18)

Lois reads short stories from the science fiction collection "Cats In Space" edited by Bill Fawcett.

First is the collection of poems "Tales of a Starship Cat" by Judith R Conley.

Second is the short story "Space-Time for Springers" by Fritz Leiber.

After some announcements, our third reading is the short story "Who's There" by Arthur C Clarke.

Finally we end with a little Hawaiian music.
