Portland-based The Decemberists have partnered with English singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Olivia Chaney to create an album which celebrates and reimagines 60's and 70's British folk rock. Front man Colin Meloy had dreamed of having The Decemberists be the Albion Band/Steeleye Span/Fairport Convention to Chaney's role as Shirley Collins/Maddy Prior/Sandy Denny. The results are stunning. The Decemberists with Olivia Chaney will be appearing at The Mondavi Center on August 18th. Please join me this Wednesday (July 26th at 5 PM).

In advance of June 4th's premiere screening of Alvin Remmer's documentary "The Closing Of The Palms Playhouse" at the Veteran's Theater in Davis, The Folk Brothers will devote our May 31 show to reminiscing about the musical magic that happened regularly in that South Davis barn. As well as the musical artists - like U Utah Phillips and Kate Wolf - whose names were associated with the old Palms, we will recall some of the extraordinary shows that graced the barn.
I am looking forward to hosting the Americana, acoustic string trio The Stray Birds on Live DiRT at the KDRT studio, Thursday, May 25th beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Stray Birds – originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania – are on the West Coast leg of the “Open Window Tour” for their most recent album “Magic Fire”, recorded in Woodstock, New York, with producer and multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson). Longtime local favorite, Joe joins Brother Peter to talk about the upcoming gig with his latest project, Joe Craven and The Sometimers, this Thursday evening, March 3, at The Davis Oddfellows Hall. Dave Nachmanoff will spin some tracks off his new album, "Spinoza's Dream" ahead of his CD release party at The N Street Cohousing Commons on Saturday, February 27th. Dave’s new album is a philosophically themed collection of new songs featuring musicians who played on some of Al Stewart’s classic albums such as "Year Of The Cat". Dave also promises to bring some albums by other artists whose music inspires him. Please join us for a fun-filled hour with one of Davis’ most respected musicians.
The Joy of Living is a new 2-CD tribute album celebrating the centenary of Ewan MacColl's birth. MacColl – born Jimmy Miller in Salford, England – was an actor, playwright, social activist, musician, and controversial figure at the heart of the British folk revival in the 1950s and 60s. Joy of Living – produced by his sons Neill and Calum – celebrates MacColl the songwriter. Although best known for the love song “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” as recorded by Roberta Flack, MacColl also wrote many songs about the less-heralded members of British society: fishermen, miners, and travelling people. There are excellent tracks contributed by U.K. folk stalwarts and MacColl contemporaries including Dick Gaughan, Martin Carthy, Paul Brady, and Norma Waterson. For those in the U.S., this album also serves as introduction to luminaries of the contemporary British folk scene – Eliza Carthy, Seth Lakeman, Karine Polwart, and The Unthanks. Tune in to KDRT as The Folk Brothers feature The Joy of Living on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 10 AM.
Davis resident Dave Nachmanoff is an award-winning singer-songwriter and renowned guitarist. He tours nationally and internationally as a solo act, as well as valued accompanist to Al Stewart. Over the many years he has resided in Davis, Dave has been a generous supporter of this community. In a rare local appearance, Dave will do a benefit concert on December 12th for Yolo Food Truck, which is raising the funds to purchase a new refrigerated truck. Dave will join the Folk Brothers live in the KDRT studio between 10 and 11 AM on Wednesday, Dec. 9th. He’ll bring his guitar, play some songs, talk about his storied musical career, and tell us why we heard him singing in Starbucks across North America last month. Please join us!
