The Golden Road for 7:00pm on Nov 10th, 2017

This week the Golden Road takes us to San Francisco and the corner of Post and Steiner for Grateful Dead music record live at the Winterland on November 9-10-11, 1973. The centerpiece of this week’s show is, of course, the forty four minute musical palindrome of Playing in the Band->Uncle John’s Band->Morning Dew->UJB->PITB, which the Dead played a few times in late 1973 and early 1974. Great stuff, that is really cool and totally Grateful Dead

This week the Golden Road takes us to the Berkeley, California for Grateful Dead music recorded live on August 25th, 1972 at the Berkeley Community Theatre. That’s right; this is the brand new, just arrived in the mail last week, Dave’s Picks 24 archival release. The band is fine form this evening (it’s 1972 after all) and it is a great recording to boot.

It has been said that the Grateful Dead interpreted Bob Dylan’s music better than Dylan himself. DJ Lee tends to agree with this (to a point). So with great pleasure, we here at Golden Road have a special Fall Fundraiser show this week highlighting what we call the Dead-Play-Dylan. No, this is not music from Postcards of the Hanging (DJ Lee doesn’t even own the CD), but hand-selected Grateful Dead Dylan covers for your listening enjoyment.

This week, the Golden Road takes us across the Good Old USA to Tidewater Virginia and the Hampton Coliseum and then wends its way up the East Coast to the New Jersey Meadowlands for Grateful Dead music from the Fall 1989 Tour. This tour was notable for the first full blown use of the Dead’s new in-instrument synthesizers (MIDI) and the return of Dark Star to the band’s song catalog.

Tonight, on the Golden Road, we set the way back machine for October 12th, 1984 and the Augusta Civic Center for the second set of this epic Grateful Dead show. The Dead always played exceptionally well in Maine (eighteen shows in all), and this Augusta Civic show may just be their best Maine show ever! Jerry was in the house on this Friday evening and every song had that extra little something special, particularly the monstrous Morning Dew that closed the second set! This show is worthy of its legendary status!

Tonight the Golden Road takes us to San Jose, California for music from the one-off Jerry Garcia Band show at the Saddle Rack. “The Rack,” as it was known, opened in 1976. It was a hot spot for Country Western music and with the club’s two stages, six bars and a mechanical bull (hmm, I wonder if Jerry took a turn?), the venue was the largest of its sort in NorCal. JGB’s March 7th, 1982 Saddle Rack show has to be one of the most unusual venues the band ever played and Jerry definitely came to play as we shall hear this evening!

We are now up to the third host on Golden Road. How can KDRT have three winners in a row? Alligator is the latest star lighting the way down the Road, and an informed host he is bringing bits of Dead history and info to add to the show fun. Tune in for a good time.
