Dead Wax for 5pm on May 27th, 2015

Tonight we're going to feature 3 tracks from the brand new album from the wordsmith Chris Stapleton. Although Traveller is his debut album, he's been hanging out in Nashville for over 15 years, writing hit songs for many mainstream country artists. Normally we tend to steer clear of mainstream country music, but tonight we're going to make an exception, this album is just too good to let some arbitrary standard of independent artist get in the way. This guy writes songs like Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. He sings with the power and soul of Mike Farris and Otis Redding. Traveller is 14 tracks but sprawls from stripped-down acoustic country tracks, like Whiskey and You, to alt-country rockers like Parachute, to pure soul likeTennessee Whiskey. I have a feeling we're going to hear a lot about this album and Chris over the next year.

Episode 29! I just got back from a 5 day flyfishing trip to Central Oregon. When life gets a little too hectic for me, I grab my fly rod, pack my bag and head for a quiet lake or river and unplug for awhile. I had a great trip to a spot that was one of my Grandpa's favorites. We used to fish there together and returning always gets me thinking about him. He was a big bluegrass fan and he loved great country picking. Tonight we're going to feature some fantastic picking with the Doc & Merle Watson album, Ballads From Deep Gap. Oringinally pressed in 1967, this album has been out of press on vinyl since. The CD reissues just didn't have great sound. On Record Store Day this year, I picked up the brand new vinyl re-issue and it sounds great. We'll hear 3 tracks from it, plus a little Jerry Jeff Walker, Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show and more!

Lemons into lemonade, things will get better, blah, blah, blah. Cliche, cliche, cliche. Sometimes things just suck. When they do, at least we have the Blues. Tonight we'll play Gary Clark Jr., Muddy Waters, Taj Mahal, John Lee Hooker, Keb' Mo', Ben Harper with Charlie Musselwhite, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Lucinda Williams, and Mavis Staples. Plus 3 tracks from Valerie June's debut album, Pushin' Against A Stone. Whether you've got 'em or not, the Blues always feel good. Tune in as we sink into them for an hour.

It's Willie Nelson's 82nd Birthday! To celebrate, we'll play 3 tracks from his newest album Band of Brothers. Plus we'll feature Nikki Lane, who is one of my favorite newer female outlaw country artists. Her 2014 album All or Nothin' is a fantastic blend of roots rock, blues, country, and soul. Produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, it features electric guitar, steel guitar, driving electric bass, a great drum kit, and occassional surf guitar. We'll play 3 tracks from the vinyl pressing. Plus we'll hear from Junior Brown, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Whitey Morgan and the 78's.

Episode 22, It's an all Outlaw show! We love the Outlaws here on Dead Wax and last week I ran across a vinyl 10" EP from Shooter Jennnings: Don't Wait Up (for George). It's a tribute album to his family friend, George Jones. Shooter is the son of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. Like Waylon, Shooter is making his music the way that he wants in the true spirit of Outlaw Country! On this EP, Shooter covers 3 Jones tunes and sings 2 original tracks. We'll play 3 songs from this excellent album, plus tracks from Billy Joe Shaver, Johnny Cash, Jamey Johnson, Townes Van Zandt, Willie, Ryan Bingham, and a host of other Outlaws! Listen in to get your Outlaw fix.
