Tonight marks my first broadcast as your newly-minted weekly Golden Road host. In honor of this officious occasion, we need something special. A mere Grateful Dead show is not enough, so we are listening to cherry-picked music from three Grateful Dead shows; three shows which do not need introduction, the glorious July 17-19, 1989 Alpine Valley run of shows. Alpine Valley was a legendary Grateful Dead tour stop and the scene of many fine shows in the 1980s, but alas, these 1989 shows would be their last at the stored shed. There is a too much musical territory to cover in one show, so tonight’s show is part one of a two parts (part two will be next week). This evening’s show will be one long fantasy set, with music culled from the Dead’s Alpine Valley first sets. Closing out the show is a little Fourth of July music. Happy Independence Day all!
