November's "Thursday Live!" concert series featured the acoustic sounds of the Rita Hosking Trio, Biscuits 'n Honey, and Me & Him. Playing to a packed house at the Odd Fellows Hall in downtown Davis Nov. 5th, this is the second in a series of monthly free concerts organized by local musician, Kurt Roggli.
The concert was recorded by KDRT's Jim Buchanan, with able assistance from KDRT programmer Dr. Strangely Strange, and will air on Live Tracks, Thursday evening, November 12th from 8-10pm. This show re-airs on Sat. 10pm-midnight, and Monday afternoon 1-3pm.
The concert opened with the acoustic guitar duo, Me & Him, featuring Kurt Roggli
(!Akimbo, Waiting for Bruce) and Martin Lewis. Lewis grew up playing guitar in England and Wales, and blends a Celtic flavor with Roggli's bluegrass tones.
Biscuits ' Honey were next up, combining folk, bluegrass and the close vocal harmonies of Dianna Craig (!Akimbo, Frankie & the Fabletones), Ron Cowden (Waiting for Bruce, Frankie & the Fabletones) and Kurt Roggli.
The Rita Hosking Trio took the stage at 9pm, and played a stunning series of songs telling stories about life's joys and struggles, especially those associated with the lives of folks in rural mining, logging and mountain towns.
Rita has won the 2008 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest at Oregon's Sisters Folk Festival, and was a finalist in the 2009 Telluride Festival Troubadour Contest. She was joined by band mates Sean Feder on banjo and Dobro, and Bill Dakin on upright bass and rhythm guitar.
We at KDRT thank the Davis Odd Fellows for hosting in their awesome Hall, Watermelon Music for providing sound equipment, Kurt Roggli's vision for organizing the series, the dedicated musicians, and all the local music lovers who came out and filled the Hall. The next Thursday Live! concert will be December 3rd, 7:30-10pm.
