"Girl Rising" Film Screening

Friday, Oct. 11 is International Day of the Girl. To  celebrate, a group of community organizers is hosting a  family  event and screening of the film, “Girl Rising.”  The event is  co-sponsored by Intel and the Unitarian Universalist Church of  Davis, and is a fundraiser for The Myanmar Children's  Foundation.

“Girl Rising” is a groundbreaking documentary film that spotlights the stories of nine unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances. The film captures their dreams, their voices and their remarkable lives, while shining a spotlight on the transformative power of educating girls.  It is also a movement dedicated to empowering and achieving educational equity for girls around the world. Girl Rising was directed by Academy Award nominee Richard E. Robbins and is narrated by Cate Blanchett, Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Chloë Moretz, Liam Neeson, Freida Pinto, Meryl Streep, and Kerry Washington.

The Girl Rising campaign, sponsored by Intel, will host a Girl Rising campaign map with the goal of capturing the attention of global policy leaders and inspiring them to include girls’ education on the post-2015 United Nations agenda, an important step for achieving educational equality for girls. The Davis event is expected to be one of 1,800 worldwide on Oct. 11.

The event takes place Friday, Oct. 11, 2013 at the UU Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road in Davis. Chabot said the event is family friendly, and all genders are encouraged to attend, though the film is recommended for viewers over age 12. (It is not violent, but deals with some challenging subject matter)

The screening is a fund raiser for local non-profit The Myanmar Children’s Foundation, which works to bring hope and opportunity to the children of Myanmar. Co-founder Susan Steinbach will discuss the foundation’s
work beginning at 6:30 p.m, with the film screening starting at 7 p.m. An
intermission with bake sale is also planned. Organizers will facilitate a post-film discussion groups for anyone who wishes to stay and discuss. Suggested donation is $5-$15 sliding scale. For more information, please reach group contacts Jessie Chabot at (530) 341-2056.
